Day 5 of the ATP Hall of Fame Championships in Newport will see the conclusion of the quarterfinals, with the highest ranked player being #71 Jordan Thompson, and all three other competitors being outside the top 100. It might not be the most glamorous lineup, but it should provide us with two entertaining and difficult to predict matches. Who do you think will win? As always, feel free to share your thoughts on the matches in the comments.
ATP Newport Day 5 Predictions
Jenson Brooksby vs Peter Gojowczyk
Head-to-head: first meeting
Both players are having amazing runs. Jenson Broosksby beat the favored Denis Kudla and Gojowczyk upset Vasek Pospisil to get to this stage. Those wins will surely make these guys confident that they can maybe go all the way this week. And the winner of this match will definitely have a real chance. There’s not really much to separate these two, but the German’s superior firepower might be enough to make the difference on this surface.
Prediction: Gojowczyk in 3
Jordan Thompson vs Maxime Cressy
Head-to-head: first meeting
Cressy pulled a stunning upset over Sam Querrey and will be coming into this match full of confidence. The American is always an entertaining player to watch, with possibly the most unorthodox game style in all of professional tennis. But Thompson himself is having quite possibly the best stretch of his career and will surely be fancying his chances of getting a first career title. It’s a match that could genuinely go either way, but the Australian has the slightest of edges.
Prediction: Thompson in 3
