The ATP Marseille Open 2020 draw sees just the eight players remain in contention for the trophy. We preview all four quarterfinal matches and predict who reaches the last four.
ATP Marseille Open Quarterfinal Predictions
Egor Gerasimov vs Felix Auger-Aliassime
Head to head – First Meeting
Egor Gerasimov is enjoying a great run as a qualifier but his sternest test awaits him in the last eight. He faces Felix Auger-Aliassime, who had to fight till the very end against Pierre-Hugues Herbert winning 11-9 in the third-set tiebreaker.
Gerasimov no doubt feels extremely confident having defeated a top ten player but the Canadian is on a fine run of form and his ability to fight augurs well for his future. Expect the Belarusian to take up the fight to the Canadian but Felix’s groundstrokes should be too strong from the baseline and post good numbers on his serve once again.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 2
Alexander Bublik vs Denis Shapovalov
Head to head – First Meeting
An interesting quarter-final clash with both players coming off good wins in their previous matches. Alexander Bublik took out Benoit Paire in three entertaining sets while Denis Shapovalov got the better of Marin Cilic in three sets as well.
This is the first meeting between the two and this match certainly rests on how well Bublik serves. From the baseline, the Canadian is the more assured out of the two and his serve was on fire blasting 17 aces. If Bublik can serve well this match can be a very tight one but it’s tough seeing him beat Shapovalov, who was hitting pretty solidly from the baseline.
Prediction: Shapovalov in 3
Daniil Medvedev vs Gilles Simon
Head to head – Simon 2-0 Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev overcame a slow start to run away with the last two sets. The Russian now faces Gilles Simon who looks in good touch in Marseille taking out Aljaz Bedene in straight sets.
Medvedev has never beaten Simon but this is the first time he’s facing him on hard courts which is the Russian’s best surface. Both players are extremely consistent from the baseline but if Medvedev plays as he played in the last two sets against Jannik Sinner, the Frenchman will find it tough to wrestle control of the match.
Prediction: Medvedev in 2
Vasek Pospisil vs Stefanos Tsitsipas
Head to head – First Meeting
Vasek Pospisil definitely deserves the quarter-final spot but to progress further would require a very special performance. Stefanos Tsitsipas hasn’t had a good start to the 2020 season but his match against Mikael Ymer surely was a very confident match from the Greek. He would need that confidence in full because the Canadian looks very comfortable in all aspects of his game.
This match has all the ingredients of going the distance and in all likelihood will do so. Pospisil will make it very close to the finish line but if the Greek’s feeling confident as the defending champ, expect Tsitsipas to counter the Canadian’s serve and nab the win.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in 3
