Only three singles’ matches were completed on the second day of the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. Former British #1 Kyle Edmund needed three sets to beat youngster Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2 4-6 6-3, whilst Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil beat Joao Sousa 6-4 6-2, with the Portuguese looking to be struggling with an injury. The last match of the day between John Millman and Michael Mmoh finished around half past 12 in the morning as the Australian won in a two tight sets 7-6 6-4 to set up a clash with Russia’s Karen Khachanov.
Edmund, 25, said after the match, “It was good, my first win of the year. A good battle. We played a lot of pressure tennis, pressure points, deuce… I don’t think I did a lot wrong in the second set. I created a break point at the 3-2 game and then he broke me and served it out.”
When asked about his expectations for the week and highlights were for the 2019 season, the former world #14 said, “I finished last year pretty well with Davis Cup and Paris. But I wanted to try to continue that. And after losing last week it’s nice to get a win on the board.”
Tomorrow promises a slightly better day here in Auckland. The top seed Fabio Fognini, will face either Feliciano Lopez or Pablo Andujar, with the young Canadian sensation Denis Shapovalov set to play his countryman Vasek Pospisil for a place in the quarterfinals at the ASB Classic in Auckland.
