WTA Linz Open Day 1 Predictions Including Jil Teichmann vs Andrea Petkovic

Andrea Petkovic Linz Open

The Linz Open gets underway on Monday and there should be no shortage of entertaining action. As ever, we here at LWOT are offering predictions for as many of the matches as possible, including Cori Gauff’s qualifying clash with Tamara Korpatsch. But who will come out on top?

Linz Open Day One Predictions

Ysaline Bonaventure vs Nina Stojanovic

Head-to-head: Bonaventure 1-0 Stojanovic

Nina Stojanovic has had a pretty good year at smaller clay-court events, but it’s Ysaline Bonaventure who has the much better indoor pedigree. The Belgian was most impressive in the first round of qualifying up against Denisa Allertova, dismissing the Czech for the loss of just two games. That is surely not an encouraging sign for Stojanovic. But the Serbian scored a comfortable win herself over Austrian Emily Meyer, beating the wild card 6-4 6-4. This may well be a close contest as a result. But it is ultimately hard to argue with Bonaventure’s advantage in their head-to-head record and her affinity for indoor hard courts.

Misaki Doi vs Jasmine Paolini

Head-to-head: first meeting

This is a final round of qualifying match. Misaki Doi had a brilliant Asian swing, finishing as runner-up in Hiroshima and defeating Donna Vekic and Kristina Mladenovic in Osaka. The Japanese was a little unconvincing against Austrian wildcard Melanie Klaffner in the first round of qualifying, but ultimately emerged a deserved 6-3 3-6 6-1 victor. Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, meanwhile, made a fine start to her qualifying campaign, hammering Mira Antonitsch 6-1 6-2, but Doi will represent a real step up in quality. The Japanese is unquestionably the superior indoor player and should be able to raise her level against Paolini.

Anna Blinkova vs Kateryna Kozlova

Head-to-head: first meeting

The Russian has had a couple of good results lately, including winning her first 125K title in New Haven, but she seems destined to struggle against Kozlova’s power hitting. The Ukrainian is an experienced campaigner and will surely make it her priority to punish her opponent’s weak second serve. Blinkova is a good mover, which may frustrate Kozlova at times in this match, but if the 25-year-old can keep her composure and stay on the front foot, she should be able to come out on top.

Jil Teichmann vs Andrea Petkovic

Head-to-head: Petkovic 1-0 Teichmann

Jil Teichmann has a real problem with consistency. At her best, she is an excellent player, as evidenced by her picking up two WTA titles this year in Prague and Palermo. But she has thrown in some rather strange losses as well and is without on the main tour since winning the title in Palermo. Her game is based around a very big forehand that requires a long wind-up and that could leave her vulnerable if Petkovic is able to rush her. Indeed, the German did just that last week at the China Open, picking up a 7-6 6-3 win in the first round as a result. On a slick and fast surface, the German should once again have plenty of options to bewilder the Swiss with her precisely angled baseline game.

Prediction: Petkovic in 3
