US Open Day 1 Predictions Including Roger Federer vs Sumit Nagal

Sumit Nagal vs Roger Federer

Roger Federer looks to continue his legend at the 2019 US Open, he’ll open with Indian Sumit Nagal, while countryman Stan Wawrinka faces Jannik Sinner. Steen Kirby and Yesh Ginsburg offer their predictions. We also have predictions for matches featuring Kei Nishikori and Novak Djokovic.

Roger Federer vs Sumit Nagal

Steen: Sumit Nagal will be thrilled to be here, but opposite Federer I don’t expect him to rise to the challenge and pull off a shocking upset. Federer in 3

Yesh: The names might be similar, but this isn’t Nadal opposite Federer on court. Expect the Maestro to roll. Federer in 3

Stan Wawrinka vs Jannik Sinner

Steen: Sinner will push Wawrinka but in the end the more experienced and accomplished Swiss will grind out a win. Wawrinka in 5

Yesh: Sinner is an impressive qualifier who might be able to cause some real trouble. I don’t think he’ll win, but expect Wawrinka to meet some resistance. Wawrinka in 4

Fabio Fognini vs Reilly Opelka

Steen: Opelka has a great shot to make a deep run in New York. His serve is lethal if he’s focused, and he should take advantage of some Fognini errors to find a way to win. Opelka in 4

Yesh: I have no idea what to do with this match. When he’s on, Fognini should be able to make inroads on the Opelka serve. But Fognini is impossible to predict, and he doesn’t like hard courts that much–though that’s changing. Fognini in 5

Alex De Minaur vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert

Steen: De Minaur is a dark horse pick this tournament. The doubles specialist PHH is not going to slow him down out of the gate. De Minaur in 3

Yesh: Herbert is a solid player, but De Minaur is really coming in to his own now. The young Aussie is a future star, and he’s about to have a major Slam breakthrough. De Minaur in 3
