Quarterfinal day at Queen’s Club brings a former champion, a few NextGen players, and some surprising names. It will be an exciting day of tennis as players such as Nicolas Mahut and Feliciano Lopez are each playing for a place in the semifinals at an ATP 500 Series event. Another featured match will be NextGen star Felix Auger-Aliassime taking on another NextGen star Stefanos Tsitsipas, which will promise to be an exciting match.
Here is my preview and predictions for quarterfinal day here at the Queen’s Club.
ATP Queen’s Club Championships Quarterfinal Predictions
Diego Schwartzman vs Daniil Medvedev
Head-to-head: Medvedev leads 1-0
It is surprising Schwartzman has made it to this quarterfinal here by beating Marin Cilic, who is a highly skilled grass court player. In the past, Schwartzman has struggled on this surface as his style is not as effective on the grass. This match is really Medvedev‘s to lose, as he has been playing consistently well and a favourite to go deep in this tournament. If Schwartzman can play at the same level against Cilic, Medvedev could be troubled.
Prediction: Medvedev in 2
Feliciano Lopez vs Milos Raonic
Head-to-head: Lopez leads 4-3
Two players that play great on grass, and this will be their first meeting on this surface. Lopez has surprised a lot of people by making it this far into the tournament, considering how little he has played this year. However, his dream run here at Queen’s is likely to come to an end. Considering how little the Spaniard has played, he is probably not that match-fit. Because against Raonic, it will come down to being how match-fit one is in taking those break points that rarely come to you. If Raonic is fully fit and healthy, he should win this match.
Prediction: Raonic in 2
Nicolas Mahut vs Gilles Simon
Head-to-head: Simon leads 6-1
Their head-to-head suggests Simon should ease past Mahut easily tomorrow. However, this will be their first meeting on grass so it will not be like their previous seven matchups. Mahut’s serve and volley playing style is highly effective on grass, and this was shown by him beating Wawrinka on Thursday. However, Simon is the slight favourite coming into this match. But an upset is certainly possible if Mahut can play at a consistently high level like he did against Wawrinka.
Prediction: Simon in 3
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Felix Auger-Aliassime
Head-to-head: Auger-Aliassime leads 1-0.
If Auger-Aliassime was physically ready, then we would have a close match in our hands. However, Auger-Aliassime just had a titanic battle against Nick Kyrgios last round (pushed to three long sets), and the match would have taken a lot out of him both physically and emotionally. On top of that, it was Auger-Aliassime’s second match of the day on Thursday, as he had to defeat Grigor Dimitrov in a rain-delayed match in the morning. Can he come back onto court in literally less than 24 hours and cause another upset? It will be tough, and the young Canadian’s physical and emotional state may make the difference between winning and losing.
