The former World No.1 and a holder of three Grand Slam titles Andy Murray has just confirmed that he’ll play the 2019 Fever Tree Championships at Queen’s Club, London. This we’ll be the Scot’s first tournament since he got a hip operation in January. It is still too soon for him to play in singles, but the organizers are keeping a wild card should he change his decision. But we do know that Murray intends to play doubles with Feliciano Lopez, who is a good friend of the Brit and his mother, Judy Murray.
Murray missed huge parts of the 2017 and the 2018 season due to a hip injury and tried to stage a comeback this January in Brisbane and at the Australian Open. However, the first operation did not succeed in making the Brit play without pain in the hip and after a first-round loss against Roberto Bautista Agut at the first Slam of the year, Murray was unsure whether he would ever take to the court again. The 3-time Grand Slam champion decided to follow in Bob Bryan’s footsteps and undergo a hip resurfacing surgery. The American had a similar problem in May 2018 and just a year later he’s back playing top-notch doubles tennis again, he also claims to be pain-free).
This decision does not come completely out of nowhere. In March Murray declared that he was pain free and that there was a chance he would return to competitive action at some point in the future, although few expected him to be in action on the grass this year. This announcement probably shouldn’t see this decision as a new beginning and a start of a doubles career, but rather as a means to start preparing for a full-fledged comeback. Whatever happens, it will be fascinating to follow the Briton’s return to action at the Queen’s Club Championships which are set to take place from the 17th to the 23rd of June.
