Alexander Zverev and Svetlana Kuznetsova Claim Citi Open Titles for 2018

Zverev Crushes De Minaur in Men’s Final

Alexander Zverev has repeated as Citi Open champion, claiming his third ATP title of the 2018 season with a routine 6-2 6-4 victory against Alex De Minaur. ADM drops to 0-2 in finals on the year as Zverev wrapped up his victory in 1 hour and 15 minutes. Zverev won 90% of his first serve points and ADM generated no break points in the contest. Zverev raced out to a 4-0 lead and then broke for 2-1 in set 2 to build an unassailable lead. Zverev failed to convert two match points on the De Minaur serve at 5-3 but he served the match out on his 4th match point.

The young Zverev has again inserted himself into conversations for potential US Open champion if he can play as well as he has in Washington for two straight years on the same surface.

Kuznetsova Claims WTA Title in Three Sets

Tour veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova came back from a set down to defeat Donna Vekic 4-6 7-6 6-2 in two and a half hours to capture the WTA title in Washington. Vekic started well building a 4-1 lead and though Kuznetsova clawed back, she was broken to drop the first set. In the second set Vekic had four match points (2 during the course of play, and 2 in the second set tiebreak) but she crumbled under pressure. The third set saw Kuznetsova break early and run away with things, breaking in the final game to take her one and only match point.
