French Open Women’s Semifinal Predictions: Sloane Stephens vs Madison Keys and Garbine Muguruza vs Simona Halep

WTA Italian Open Day 1 Predictions

There are only two rounds remaining in the French Open. Two of these four players will compete for the crown here in Paris. Who will it be? Our team offers their insights on both matches. Predicting today are writers Brett Margolies, Ryan Schick, and Jay Sandhu, along with editors Steen Kirby and Yesh Ginsrburg.

French Open Women’s Semifinal Predictions

Sloane Stephens vs Madison Keys

Brett:
Sloane Stephens continues to play better and better as the tournament goes on. Besides the third round match against Camila Giorgi, Stephens has yet to lose more than three games in any set in her other four matches. Madison Keys is far from a clay court player, but she’s managed to reach the semifinals to her credit. If this match were next month on the grass at Wimbledon, I’d like her chances a lot better. I think Stephens once again wins comfortably.
Prediction: Stephens in 2

Steen:
Stephens has swept the H2H and in an even contest that’s enough for me to pick her prevail.
Prediction: Stephens in 3

Ryan:
Seeing two Americans not named Williams in the semis at the French is incredible. This is a rematch of the US Open final, which was won by Stevens, giving her a small edge. However, Keys is a bit more comfortable on clay and will have a little more desire and will win an incredibly tight match.

Jay:
Whoever wins this match will certainly go on to win the tournament. As usual, Halep has had such an impressive clay season and will be more eager than ever to capture her first Grand Slam title, while the Spaniard has put a pretty disastrous clay season to bed and has played so well so far. This could be such a close match, but Muguruza always plays well in Slam semifinals so I think she should overcome her opponent.
Prediction: Muguruza in 3

Yesh:
Aside from struggling against Camila Giorgi in the third rounds, Stephens has been dominant this tournament. Madison Keys has been dominant all tournament, but she has yet to face anyone playing at nearly the level of Stephens. This match looks like it will go the way of their US Open final meeting last year.

Garbine Muguruza vs Simona Halep

Brett:
It’s hard to pick against Garbine Muguruza after her performance today against Maria Sharapova. Her and Sloane Stephens look like their on a collision course for a meeting in the finals. It’s only right that we get to see them play in the finals, as they’ve been head and shoulders above the rest of the women’s field so far.
Prediction: Muguruza in 2

Steen:
Muguruza just walloped Sharapova and I’d make her the favorite overall right now. Halep will give it a good effort but Muguruza should win.
Prediction: Muguruza in 2

Ryan:
Muguruza is in form coming off a beatdown of Maria Sharapova. Halep struggled against a weaker clay court player in Kerber but looked strong at the end. This will be a fight between power and control, and the conditions recently will favor Muguruza.
Prediction: Mugurza in 3

Jay:
Both players have capitalised on a fairly easy draw to make it this far. Keys hasn’t lost a set so far and had to overcome challenges from Osaka and Putinsteva, while Stephens’ only challenge was against Giorgi and has cruised through the rest of the matches. However, in their previous meetings, Stephens has won all their matches relatively easily and I don’t think Keys has the consistency to perpetually hit past her fellow opponent.
Prediction: Stephens in 2

Yesh:
Muguruza just looks unbeatable right now. She’s so dominant that I’d be sorely tempted to pick her over an in-form Serena Williams (at least on clay). That’s how strong the Spaniard is right now.
