Kvitova’s Tennis Recovery and Purple Patch Gathers Momentum in Doha

Petra Kvitova

Around fourteen months ago, medics would have advised the gutsy Czech, Petra Kvitova, not to play ten matches.

Kvitova’s Amazing Recovery from Tragedy

That was, obviously, after a severe hand injury occurred fighting off an intruder in her home. However, victory over Elina Svitolina to earn a quarter-final berth in Doha completes a ten match winning streak. It is hard to imagine how great an achievement that is. In the last round, Agnieszka Radwanska looked like she’d cap the winning streak at eight, dominating the first set. Kvitova is nothing if not game, and stoic determination kept the unbeaten run going. Now, it is not clear when it will end.

In-Form Julia Goerges Up Next for Kvitova

Germany’s Julia Goerges will test the in-form Petra Kvitova in their Qatar Total Open quarterfinal. There is no doubt about that. Kvitova is showing that ferocious determination last seen at Wimbledon 2014 – when she tore Eugenie Bouchard apart to win the title for the 2nd time. Even now, with Wimbledon just under five months away, it’s hard not to think that the seemingly impossible third title, is not only possible but probable. The Czech just needs to maintain that mental toughness that has got her this far.

The Czech leads the head-to-head 3-1 over the in-form Goerges. It’d be unwise to bet against her extending that lead. The head-to-head is inclusive of a tight three-set victory for the Czech in St. Petersberg this year. This was en route to Kvitova’s first title of the season.

Petra Kvitova is Playing Almost Pressure Free

There was a school of thought prior to the injury absence – that Kvitova was underachieving. It’s difficult to understand that viewpoint, as two Slams in a Serena Williams dominated era is a good haul. Although, for someone of Kvitova’s class and quality, she should have won more than her two Wimbledon’s.

Given the fact that all this has been forgotten since the return from injury. There is every chance of a third Wimbledon this year. Before that – a Qatar Total Open title will do nicely.
