We comment on Roger Federer completing the Sunshine Double and immediately announcing that he is effectively skipping the clay season outside of Roland Garros, so we theorize what is behind this decision. We then reflect on Johanna Konta’s Miami run for the biggest title of her career so far. Will she win a Slam? Will she become No. 1? Our opinions differ! Kerber again misses out on the final stages of a tournament. When can she get back on track?
We smoothly segue into this week, with the WTA events in Charleston and Monterrey and a Davis Cup weekend. World No. 1 Angelique Kerber will attempt to capture her first title of the year in Monterrey, but the road will not be easy, having to face Francesca Schiavone in the opener, then Heather Watson or Ekaterina Makarova in the quarterfinals, possibly Carla Suarez Navarro or Alize Cornet in the semifinals, and Caroline Garcia or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to top it off. None of them are Top 16 players, but Kerber has had trouble stringing wins together in 2017, so we have to take a vote of confidence in the WTA No. 1. We then move on to the bigger tournament of the week, the Volvo Car Open (most awkwardly named tennis tournament), or as everybody calls it- Charleston. We make identical predictions somehow, even though we both predicted an unseeded finalist.
We continue with a rubber-by-rubber (more awkward names) predictions for Davis Cup quarterfinals, paying special attention to United States – Australia and Serbia – Spain. I develop a masterplan for Jim Courier that will definitely ensure the win for Team USA, and then we quarrel over Viktor Troicki’s skills. To finish the episode, I lose it at Cody’s reaction to the Indian Davis Cup team.
