Service Academy football brought plenty of excitement in Week 2 as both Navy and Army grabbed headlines. From Navy’s steady win to Army’s shocking upset in Manhattan, Price Atkinson and Steve Carney discussed on Yards And Stripes how fans of the academies had much to celebrate.
Navy Grinds Out a Conference Win
The Navy Midshipmen improved to 2–0 with a 38–24 victory over UAB in their American Athletic Conference opener. Quarterback Blake Horvath balanced a powerful rushing attack with efficient passing, throwing for 168 yards and a score while also rushing for two touchdowns. Navy’s defense clamped down in the second half, forcing three turnovers and pitching a shutout to seal the milestone 750th program win.
Army Stuns Kansas State on the Road
The story of the weekend belonged to Army. Behind first-time starter Cale Hellums, the Black Knights rallied from a 13–0 deficit to knock off Kansas State 24–21 in front of over 50,000 fans. Hellumms carried the ball 41 times for 124 yards and two scores while also throwing a touchdown. The defense dominated the second half, holding the Wildcats to just 48 total yards. Cornerback Collin Matteson sealed the win with a one-handed interception late in the fourth quarter. The victory helps coach Jeff Monken get his team back even on the year at 1-1. It may not erase their Week 1 loss to Tarleton State, but teams know Army is no doormat.
Air Force Takes Week 2 To Prepare for Conference Play
Air Force had a bye week but now turns its attention to Utah State. The Falcons enter on a five-game winning streak and will try to take advantage of an Aggies offensive line that has surrendered 12 sacks in just two games. Quarterback Bryson Barnes will be tested as Air Force looks to keep its Mountain West title hopes strong.
