Week 6 of the college football season will be remembered for one thing above all: UCLA’s jaw-dropping upset of seventh-ranked Penn State. In one of the most improbable results in recent memory, the Bruins—winless heading into the weekend—stormed into the national conversation with a 42–37 victory that defied logic, history, and expectations.  Matt Zemek breaks that down and more this week on Get Off My Pylon.

UCLA Sends Nittany Lions Reeling

Interim head coach Tim Skipper and newly promoted offensive coordinator Jerry Neuheisel engineered the program’s biggest win in nearly four decades. UCLA’s offense, which had looked lifeless a week earlier, erupted for 430 total yards, becoming just the fifth team in over a decade to post that total against a James Franklin–coached Penn State defense. Freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava led the charge with over 120 rushing yards and three touchdowns, the first Bruin to hit those marks since 2000.

The victory was historic: UCLA became the first team since 1986 to start 0–4 and defeat a top-10 opponent. Neuheisel’s debut as play-caller was nothing short of cinematic—outmaneuvering Penn State’s highly paid defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, whose $3 million salary contrasted sharply with Neuheisel’s entry-level contract. The result was a masterclass in creativity and aggression, punctuated by a gutsy onside kick to open the game and a perfectly executed intentional safety to close it out.

West Coast Teams Finished With Mixed Outcomes

While UCLA celebrated, the rest of the West had mixed fortunes.

  • Boise State and the Mountain West continued to fade from the national radar.
  • Cal’s promising start collapsed in a blowout loss to Duke, while Stanford sat idle.
  • Arizona coasted past Oklahoma State, inching toward bowl eligibility.
  • Colorado, amid head coach Deion Sanders’ ongoing health struggles, suffered another setback against TCU.
  • Oregon State remained winless, continuing a heartbreaking string of near-misses.

Looking ahead, Week 7 brings two pivotal Big Ten matchups involving western programs: Michigan vs. USC in Los Angeles and Oregon vs. Indiana in Eugene. Both games carry major playoff implications. USC’s high-powered offense will test a struggling Michigan team, while Oregon and Indiana face off in what could amount to a playoff play-in game.

But for now, the spotlight shines brightly on Westwood, where an interim coach, a rookie play-caller, and a resilient group of players delivered a night that will echo through college football history.
