College football’s biggest tests of the season are finally here, and Matt Zemek breaks it all down on this week’s Get Off My Pylon. After a review of Week 4, attention turns to a loaded Week 5 slate that will finally reveal which teams are contenders and which are pretenders across the Big Ten, Big 12, and Mountain West.
Utah’s QB Woes Continue
Week 4’s most pressing storyline came from Utah’s narrow loss to Texas Tech. The Utes once again struggled with quarterback health. Starter Devon Dampier was banged up, yet still played, leaving fans frustrated about the lack of a reliable backup plan. Kyle Whittingham has faced the same quarterback depth issues for three straight seasons, and the problem has cost Utah dearly in its pursuit of Big 12 contention.
Arizona State, UNLV, and the Mountain West Picture
Elsewhere in the Big 12, Arizona State barely scraped past Baylor, fueling doubts about its ability to live up to lofty preseason expectations. UNLV continued to stumble despite a comeback win over Miami (OH), while Boise State showed offensive firepower in a shootout victory over Air Force. San Diego State, however, made the biggest Mountain West statement with a stunning 34–0 demolition of Cal, putting the Aztecs back in the conversation.
USC, Washington, and the Big Ten Tests Ahead
In the Big Ten’s new West Coast landscape, USC rolled past Michigan State, but defensive penalties and a shaky secondary remain issues. Washington crushed rival Washington State, while Oregon dominated Oregon State—but those wins came against weak opponents. The real tests come in Week 5. Ohio State visits Washington, USC travels to Illinois, and Oregon meets Penn State in the weekend’s headline clash.
Oregon vs. Penn State: The Game of the Week
Saturday night’s Oregon–Penn State battle in Happy Valley is the first true top-tier showdown of the season. Quarterback Dante Moore faces his first real test after feasting on overmatched defenses, while Penn State’s Drew Allar is expected to lead a veteran offense in a playoff-level environment. With both teams untested against quality opponents, this matchup will reveal just how good they really are.
As Zemek notes, Week 5 is when the cupcakes are gone, the pretenders are exposed, and the playoff race takes shape. Oregon–Penn State stands tall as the centerpiece, but Ohio State–Washington and USC–Illinois will also reshape the national picture.
