Lewis Hamilton Secures Pole Position for Mexican Grand Prix

It was Lewis Hamilton who secured pole position for Mercedes at the Mexican Grand Prix, outqualifying his team mate, Nico Rosberg who will start in second place. Max Verstappen qualified in third place for Red Bull Racing.

Qualifying 1

Lewis Hamilton fastest in Qualifying 1, closely followed by Kimi Raikkonen for Ferrari. Q1 marked the exit of six drivers from qualifying. In what is his home race, Esteban Gutierrez was eliminated in Q1, with the Mexican driver spinning his car during his final qualifying run, meaning that he will start in seventeenth place. Daniil Kvyat qualified in eighteenth place for Toro Rosso after experiencing engine issues, meaning that he only managed to complete four laps. In nineteenth place for Sauber was Felipe Nasr, with Nasr failing to make it into Qualifying 2 for the eighth race in succession. Esteban Ocon qualified in twentieth place for Manor while Romain Grosjean qualified in twenty-first after experiencing battery issues in his Haas F1 car. Renault’s Jolyon Palmer will start from the pit lane for the Mexican Grand Prix after sustaining chassis damage during final practice earlier today, meaning that he was unable to compete in qualifying. The Briton believed that he could easily get into Q2 with his car and now needs to focus on the ‘best result’ he can for the race.

Qualifying 2

Max Verstappen was fastest in Qualifying 2 for Red Bull Racing, becoming the first driver this weekend to break into the 1 minute and 18 second lap time. Lewis Hamilton was second fastest while his team mate and current championship leader, Nico Rosberg struggled to find a rhythm in Q2, leaving him in fifth. Q2 marked the exit of another six drivers. Fernando Alonso will start in eleventh place for McLaren after being pushed out of the top 10 by Nico Hulkenberg. Sergio Perez will start in twelfth place for Force India after failing to improve during his final lap in qualifying. Jenson Button qualified in thirteenth place while Kevin Magnussen was fourteenth fastest for Renault. Starting in fifteenth place will be Marcus Ericsson for Sauber while Pascal Wehrlein was the slowest driver in the session for Manor, meaning that he will start in sixteenth place.

Qualifying 3

It was Lewis Hamilton who was fastest in Qualifying 3, meaning that he will start in pole position for the Mexican Grand Prix, marking Mercedes’ eighteenth pole position this season. Nico Rosberg was second fastest, while Max Verstappen qualified in third place for Red Bull Racing. Daniel Ricciardo was fourth fastest while Nico Hulkenberg qualified in fifth place, meaning that he out qualified both of the Ferrari cars. Kimi Raikkonen was sixth fastest despite experiencing engine issues towards the end of his session, outqualifying his team mate, Sebastian Vettel who qualified in seventh place. Valtteri Bottas was eighth fastest for Williams and Felipe Massa was ninth fastest. Carlos Sainz Jr was the slowest driver in Q3, meaning that he will start in tenth place for Toro Rosso.
