George Russell reveals special clause in new Mercedes contract

The rising intensity of this year’s title race has overshadowed one of the bigger stories in F1 this season – the contract negotiations between George Russell and Mercedes.

Russell was in talks with the Silver Arrows for months, as discussions between the two parties lasted longer than anticipated. The British driver’s insistence on securing an agreement that gave him guarantees for 2026 contributed to the extended length of discussions.

In short, the 5-time Grand Prix winner wanted security in the face of Mercedes’ long-standing interest in Verstappen. Speaking in a recent interview, the 27-year-old outlined the terms of his new contract.

Russell gives details on new contract agreement with Mercedes

George Russell is no stranger to being in an awkward position during negotiations. Across his three years at Williams, there was generally a sense that he was ready for a Mercedes promotion.

However, Williams refused to let him leave the team before his contract expired. Even with the relationship between Mercedes and Williams (their customer team), no progress was made in allowing Russell to join Brackley before his agreement terminated.

This meant that for a few years, particularly after his cameo appearance in Sakhir 2020, the British driver was playing the waiting game – eagerly anticipating the next chapter of his career.

There were echoes of this uncertainty in the first half of 2025. During this time, Russell was forced to watch from the sidelines as Mercedes probed Max Verstappen’s availability. For obvious reasons, Russell was unimpressed at not being given priority in contract talks for 2026.

Toto Wolff’s pursuit of Verstappen, whose Red Bull deal prevented him from leaving for 2026, was a reminder of the Austrian team principal’s long-term ambition to bring the four-time Champion to Brackley.

It also served as an important reminder for Russell that a strong contract would be necessary to preserve his position. This was a central motivation in his unwavering commitment to an agreement that would give him some sense of security for 2026.

During an interview with The Telegraph, he explained what his new Mercedes contract looks like:

“It is something I haven’t actually said publicly, but the deal is…

“If I’m performing [in 2026] we have a specific clause that if I reach [a specific target] we will automatically renew for 2027.

“So my seat for 2027 is in my hands, I’m not being strung along here. We’re not going to be in the same position as we were six months ago.

“If I perform, and I don’t want to go into details, but if I perform – then 100% I’ll be staying.”

Verstappen no longer a target for Mercedes?

Russell’s comments provide some invaluable insights into his new deal with Mercedes. However, there are still some gaps that leaves some level of ambiguity.

When the 27-year-old mentions specific targets, there are two plausible things this could mean.

The first scenario is that reaching a certain number of points will trigger his extension for 2027. This could either be in absolute terms, or (because next year is such an unknown) relative to teammate Kimi Antonelli.

There is also the possibility that a specified position in the standings is his target. This would be similar to Max Verstappen’s existing Red Bull contract, which had an exit clause that could be activated if he was lower than third in the standings at the summer break.

Because the Dutchman was exactly in third place, a move to Mercedes for 2026 was ruled out. Ironically, this stipulation that helped Russell keep his position at the Silver Arrows might have inspired his new contract.

Regardless of the details in this agreement, Russell is satisfied that his future is within his control. This will grant him a certain level of clarity before 2026, a year where Mercedes are seen as likely contenders.
