Dazzling Performance Sees Connor Zilisch Best SVG in Xfinity Series Race at Sonoma

Everyone was in for another treat on Saturday, as the NASCAR Xfinity Series took to Sonoma Raceway. The elite of road course racing once again rose to the forefront, as SVG and Connor Zilisch put on a show. It wasn’t the first, and it certainly won’t be the last, but this time the 18-year-old phenom took the checkered flag first.

Dazzling Performance Sees Connor Zilisch Best SVG in Xfinity Series Race at Sonoma

It’s no secret that at this rate, Connor Zilisch is well on his way to the now-open seat at Trackhouse Racing in the Cup Series next season. Zilisch only added to his aura in the Pit Boss / FoodMaxx 250. He and Shane van Gisbergen again blew away the rest of the field. Much like they did on the Streets of Chicago. Zilisch and SVG combined to lead all but nine laps of the 79-lap race. Not to mention, Zilisch scored his third win of the 2025 season. He has been red-hot since missing the Texas race because of a back injury and continues to get better every week.

This race was no different as he had to hold off a huge charge from van Gisbergen, who wasn’t afraid to test the teenager.

Surely, there were 36 other drivers on the track, including Sam Mayer and Brandon Jones, just to name the pair that won the stages on Saturday, but the whole story was at the front of the field, where Zilisch and SVG traded the lead on several occasions throughout the race.

Disappointing Weekend For Jesse Love

Jesse Love is great pals with Zilisch, and the pair have had some fun and tough battles for wins this season. Love’s luck of good runs hit a major snag 11 laps into Saturday’s race. It certainly would have been interesting to see if he could’ve been upfront in the fight between Zilisch and SVG.

Love has proven in the past that he can sneak into the picture at the road courses. Yet that wasn’t the case in Sonoma.

Issues with the rear gear derailed from a great qualifying day, as he had started the race in 4th right behind the frontrunners. It was certainly a major what-if for Jesse, and a disappointing weekend overall.

Incident-Free Race Leads to Great Racing for the Win

There weren’t any real issues during the race, as the only cautions were for two stage breaks. Other than that, everyone kept things on course. I mean, with 10 laps to go in the race, all focus turned to the front two, as they fought tooth and nail to try and outfox each other.

The only real issue on track was a bit of off-road racing from Austin Hill, but he was ultimately forced off the track by Corey Day with less than six to go. Hill kept after it and did a little bumping over the curve to get back on course, but the bumpy ride ultimately sent Day off track and around.

Both were able to continue, but it wasn’t the finish Corey was looking for.

Meanwhile, Zilisch and SVG were right on top of each other as the laps continued to wind down. They are teammates, and so they could ruff each other up, could they? No, they didn’t, but a couple of bumps to Zilisch’s bumper certainly made the final five laps that much more intriguing to watch. All of the corners Zilisch could’ve blown the chance on, and he held fast against Shane. It was simply a dazzling drive from the 18-year-old.

Despite each of Shane’s tries, he just couldn’t pull it off. But he seemed very happy with running second on Saturday. As van Gisbergen told the CW’s Kim Coon, he hoped everyone enjoyed the race.

It was good, hard racing, and everyone was treated to a great show. Hopefully, the Cup race puts on something similar, but who knows with those guys.
