Hamilton unhappy with “negative” media reaction to team radio

Lewis Hamilton faced some turbulence in his F1 debut with Ferrari, only managing 10th at the Australian GP. It was primarily poor strategy that prevented both Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc from taking more points.

In almost traditional fashion, Ferrari were the recipients of immense scrutiny after the first round.

Both their strategy and team radio communication were put in the spotlight, with particular attention paid to Lewis Hamilton and his race engineer – Riccardo Adami.

From Hamilton’s perspective, the narrative surrounding his radio communications after Australia is unfair.

Hamilton dismisses communication concerns

For over a decade, it was Peter ‘Bono’ Bonnington who was Hamilton’s race engineer at Mercedes.

The relationship between the two Britons was an iconic one, renowned for its success and efficiency in equal measure.

Understandably, it will take some time before the 7-time Champion and his new race engineer are fully in sync.

Of course, this will not prevent reaction from fans and media outlets alike when their communication is sub-optimal.

Lewis Hamilton does not agree with some of the rhetoric that emerged after last weekend’s race:

“There’s not an ideal, every driver requires different information,” he told Sky Sports.

“George, for example, likes a lot of information – or he used to when I was racing with him.

“For me, I don’t need or like a lot of information. It can sometimes be overloading or overbearing.

“But the relationship between Bono and I, it took years for us – it took so much time for us to learn each other.

“Because he’d worked with previous drivers and they required a different amount of information. So you just, bit by bit, trial and error, you try different things along the way.

“Eventually you gel. Ricky and I are getting on super well, and that was our first race together.

“That was the first time he was having to throw those balls into the cockpit, and we dealt with 90% of those totally fine.”

Ferrari under more scrutiny than ever

As F1’s most successful and historic team, Ferrari are no strangers to the spotlight.

However, even by their standards, this season has seen an unusually high level of anticipation around the Maranello-based operation.

The arrival of Lewis Hamilton obviously plays a role, bringing together two of the most iconic names in F1.

This is not the only factor, though, with Ferrari’s competitiveness at the end of 2024 creating high expectations heading into this season.

Before the season began, Charles Leclerc even stated that it would be “disappointing” if Ferrari don’t claim at least one title this year.

After a disappointing round one, Lewis Hamilton will try to manage expectations and calm some of the rhetoric:

“And afterwards we just talked – this is what I did need, and this is the bit I didn’t need.

“And it’s like no problem, next time we’ll do it differently. That’s how it is.

“I don’t know why everyone is being so negative about it. Generally the media have been talking about it, and I was polite – I always said please at the end.

“When you look at some of the drivers who have been super vocal, almost abusive with their engineers – that have taken batterings for years.

“And mine didn’t even take a battering. There were a couple of individuals that were quite rude on how we spoke.

“But anyways, it’s something you learn along the way. Race by race we’re going to get stronger together, and that’s the important thing.”
