Chase Briscoe Earns Toyota First Daytona 500 Pole, & Duel Race Preview

Chase Briscoe, in his new ride with Joe Gibbs Racing, earns the first Daytona 500 pole for Toyota in NASCAR. Team Penske’s Austin Cindric will start alongside.

The new relationship between Chase Briscoe and Joe Gibbs Racing is off to a hot start. Briscoe came out swinging during his qualifying laps and put his No. 19 Bass Pro Shops Toyota on the pole for the Great American Race. It appears to be a massive carryover from just last season, as that No. 19 won the final two poles of last season with former driver Martin Truex Jr behind the wheel. Briscoe captured and took the pole with a lap of 49.249 seconds. As for the driver he shares the front row with, Austin Cindric gives Team Penske a front-row starter for the second-straight season.

Ford was able to have four drivers inside the top 10 in qualifying, including RFK Racing’s Ryan Preece, and defending Cup Series Champion Joey Logano. JGR also had two other cars in the Top 10 in qualifying as both Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin advanced to the second round of qualifying. Hendrick Motorsports was nearly shut out of the Top 10, as Kyle Larson was the best of the group qualifying 10th overall.

It’s clear Ford and Toyota both came to Daytona to make a statement in qualifying, and they did just that.

Surprises For Chevrolet

It’s no secret for the better part of the last 13 years, Chevrolet has been dominant when it has come to qualifying at the Daytona 500. Especially Hendrick Motorsports who won the pole for the Daytona 500 the most in NASCAR history.  That seems to have changed significantly, as they failed to put cars on the front row for the second year in a row. The best Chevy drivers in qualifying happened to be Austin Dillon from Richard Childress Racing and his younger brother Ty Dillon from Kaulig Racing.

That may not have been the biggest shocker of the night, as JR Motorsports’ inaugural qualifying effort didn’t go as planned, as Justin Allgaier lacked the speed to lock himself into the field with his single-car run. So he will have to race his way through the duels. Last year was a great example of why maybe it’s better to not start on the front row, especially for HMS, as their driver William Byron won the race after starting in 18th.

Former Cup Champions Secure Their Spots in the 500

Martin Truex Jr and Jimmie Johnson both found themselves in a go or go home situation as they are two of the nine open cars trying to make the Daytona 500. They both will have some comfort going into the duels. Both Toyota drivers were able to qualify with the two fastest speeds of the nine cars trying to race their way in. That certainly adds to a great night for the manufacturer.

Lineups for the Duel at Daytona:

With qualifying now complete and the pole winner decided it’s time to take a closer look at how the two duel races will line up. With Briscoe and Cindric both starting first in each of those two races, it’s time to determine how the rest of the field will line up for Sunday. The first of those duel races will set the inside row, while the second duel race determines the lineup for the outside row.
