McLaren join Ferrari in all-out 2025 development approach

Andrea Stella’s McLaren are working on bold solutions for their 2025 challenger. Not satisfied with last year’s Championship result, McLaren have a clear objective for this season – to surprise rivals with their innovations.

The British team would be forgiven for taking a relatively conservative approach this winter.

Their outstanding rate of development over the last eighteen months has put them in a very strong position heading into 2025.

However, McLaren have determined that a cautious approach could be a death sentence for their title aspirations.

Why McLaren are taking risks

Immediately after the conclusion of last year’s Championship, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella spoke candidly about his 2025 targets.

For all the progress his squad have achieved, last season taught the Woking team one crucial lesson – having the fastest car is not enough to guarantee success.

Only by dominating rivals can a Championship be comfortably grasped with both hands.

After all, despite the MCL38 being the fastest car in 2024, Max Verstappen managed to retain the F1 crown.

A combination of McLaren’s operational mistakes and moments of brilliance from Verstappen allowed the Dutchman to claim a fourth world title.

Well aware that last year’s drivers Championship could have been theirs, McLaren are leaving no stone unturned for their 2025 challenger.

Much like Ferrari, their closest rivals in 2024, the papaya outfit are committed to an altogether new package.

Andrea Stella: We cannot be satisfied

Alongside performance-related considerations, McLaren are taking such risks because they fundamentally believe a big step forward is necessary to compete for both titles:

“This is something that we have repeatedly said internally at McLaren,” Stella explained to motorsport.com at the end of 2024.

“Let’s look at what Ferrari have been able to do. Responding to some wobbles in the middle of the season, delivering a large amount of performance.

“And now they’ve had, in our knowledge. I think the fastest car over the last few races of the season.

“Let’s look at how much Red Bull have been able to keep delivering, even when the car wasn’t necessarily the fastest car…

“So the trajectory we’ve been having is king of not enough if we want to genuinely be a contender in 2025 in both Championships.

“This is not the time to be happy without trajectory.

“This is the time to say that the level, the bar, needs to be raised.”

Breaking the development ceiling

With 2025 being the final year of these existing regulations, unlocking more performance is becoming increasingly difficult.

Even Ferrari, who made impressive gains in the second half of the season, only did so after facing uncomfortable truths – following their failed Spanish GP upgrades.

The package they brought to Barcelona revealed important lessons to the Italian team.

Arguably the most impactful was the realisation that a stronger platform was needed to accelerate their progression.

This inspired the Scuderia’s Monza update package. Aside from it’s short-term benefits, these alterations served as the of Ferrari’s revised 2025 concept.

It is understood the Italian team’s latest challenger will feature a brand new front suspension.

Whilst McLaren’s front suspension will remain the same, they reached similar big-picture conclusions to their Maranello rivals.

Having climbed the field so rapidly since 2023, the papaya outfit trust themselves to out-develop the competition one more time.

Not by taking incremental steps – but instead by catapulting themselves to new heights with innovative solutions.
