Fred Vasseur “Not Worried” About Leclerc and Hamilton Competition

Having signed Lewis Hamilton on a multi-year contract, Ferrari are in a unique position heading into 2025. The Scuderia have one of the most highly anticipated driver line-ups in history – which comes with advantages and challenges in equal measure. When asked about managing such a strong duo, Fred Vasseur was completely relaxed.

Vasseur “not worried” about teammate battles

Looking ahead to this season, Ferrari are well-positioned to launch a Championship bid. They finished the 2024 campaign in impressive fashion, bridging the gap to McLaren and narrowly missing out on the constructors title.

Upgrades to the SF-24 in Monza compensated for the team’s mid-season hiccup, correcting their trajectory heading into 2025.

Assuming that Ferrari can sustain last year’s progress, there is reason to expect Hamilton and Leclerc will contend for victories in the coming months.

It would be inaccurate to suggest that Ferrari are strangers to having two closely matched drivers. Their latest exit, Carlos Sainz, regularly pushed Leclerc to the limits during his time at Maranello.

However, the arrival of a 7-time Champion could add a new level of intensity to the inter-team rivalry in the Ferrari garage. After all, this could be the first time in decades that both Maranello drivers could fight for the drivers’ title.

From the perspective of team principal Fred Vasseur, this is a good problem to have:

“Charles, Lewis, I am not particularly worried about this,” the BBC quotes him as saying.

“They have a huge mutual respect, they know each other, they have been talking about this for months now.

“It is much better to fight for 1st and 3rd, or 2nd and 3rd, than to fight for 19th and 20th.

“It is a good issue for a team to have this kind of discussion and approach, and I am really convinced again that the performance of the team is coming from the emulation between the two.”

A step into the unknown

For obvious reasons, there is immense excitement heading into this year’s campaign. Not just Ferrari, but Mercedes, McLaren and Red Bull all have legitimate Championship aspirations this season.

Because of this, there is extra incentive for Lewis Hamilton to acclimatise quickly to his new home at Maranello. The British driver certainly didn’t make this blockbuster move without the ambition to win.

Still, it is worth considering the potential medium-term ramifications of the 2025 season. If either Ferrari driver claims the drivers’ title, it will undoubtedly change the dynamics heading into 2026.

With fresh regulations on approaching, there is no guarantee the Italian squad will be at the front in twelve months.

Winning a World Championship this year, for different reasons, would alleviate the pressure on both Hamilton and Leclerc heading into 2026.

Having spent over five years at the team, Leclerc is hungry for title success. Although there can be no doubting his faith in the Maranello project, there is only so long the Monegasque can continue waiting for a title-winning car.

This it perhaps the first time the 27-year-old heads into a season with realistic aspirations of taking the crown. For Lewis Hamilton, who recently turned 40, time is also of the essence.

This all places tremendous significance on the next twelve months at Ferrari, who continue their search for an elusive World title.
