F1 News: Williams 2025 car being affected by this year’s crashes

Development for the 2025 season has been impacted by the volume of crashes Williams have suffered, reveals James Vowles. The British team principal is transparent about the problems that lie ahead.

Vowles explains the mounting cost of Williams crash damages

One of the main factors that impacted the decision to replace Logan Sargeant was the American’s tendency to crash.

Prior to Colapinto’s arrival, Sargeant sustained significant incidents in Japan, Miami, Canada and Zandvoort.

Almost immediately, Franco Colapinto proved capable of delivering better results for Williams, scoring point in his second race at Baku.

However, in a somewhat ironic twist of fate, the Argentine has committed more errors than his predecessor.

Colapinto has met with the barriers in Baku, Brazil (twice), Las Vegas and Qatar.

With Alex Albon also crashing out in Brazil, the last few months have been hugely costly for the Grove-based team.

Williams pay the price on 2025 development

Speaking before last weekend’s Qatar GP (a race where Colapinto was hit and forced to retire), James Vowles admitted that next year is being compromised:

“They have an impact, you can’t have 15 crashes without slowing down future years or current years.

“What I can say is that it hasn’t slowed down the 2026 work, that’s happening separately.

“We also have already segregated an amount of individuals, for growth of the team, for transformation of the team – and it hasn’t impacted on them.

“But without doubt, it’s had an impact on just how we shape the following year.”

Vowles focused on the 2026 regulations

It is easily forgotten that Williams were already on the backfoot at the beginning of 2024.

There were even concerns they would arrive late to pre-season testing, with development of the FW46 going behind schedule.

Because of this early delay, the FW46 was several kilograms overweight to start the season – costing the team a few tenths per lap in performance.

Over the course of the year, the British squad have steadily improved their package. Arguably their most important set of updates came at the Dutch GP.

One of the main aspects of this package was that it eliminated most of the FW46’s excess weight. In many ways, this upgrade put the team in a position they would have ideally started the season in.

With this in mind, the crash costs sustained in 2024 are another obstacle for the team to overcome.

From a long-term perspective, James Vowles is unapologetic about fully committing to the new 2026 regulations.

This means that, whilst next season is still integral, Williams are willing to make sacrifices over the coming months.
