Valtteri Bottas inches closer to Mercedes return

Despite missing out on a full-time contract, Valtteri Bottas could still be active in the F1 paddock next year. The Finn is understood to be in negotiations with Mercedes for a reserve driver role.

Bottas plans next steps in Formula 1

Failing to secure a deal with Sauber, or any other team, is undoubtedly a huge blow for Bottas’ F1 aspirations.

At the beginning of the season, there were many plausible options for the 10-time race winner.

Sauber, Williams and even Alpine were all named as realistic destinations for Bottas. He was even spotted entering and leaving the Williams motorhome before the summer break.

Unfortunately for the Finn, Sainz’s shock move to Williams eliminated one of his best options.

Alpine’s decision to sign Doohan closed yet another door, leaving Sauber as the last lifeline for a full-time contract.

With Mattia Binotto’s team ultimately opting for Gabriel Bortoleto to complete their 2025 line-up, Bottas must work on his contingency plan.

Mercedes reserve role a logical next step

Amidst all the uncertainties of this year’s driver market, Bottas has insisted his time in F1 is not over.

Although he failed to secure a contract for 2025, the 35-year-old’s F1 career can still be revived. Other drivers, most recently Nico Hulkenberg, have returned to the grid after time away.

Speaking of Hulkenberg, it is understood that Valtteri Bottas is planning a similar strategy to form a platform for a potential F1 comeback.

Other racing series, such as IndyCar or WEC, could still appeal to Bottas in the future. However, these routes would likely end any chances of returning to F1.

Because of this, a reserve driver contract with Mercedes is anticipated as his next step.

With over a decade of experience, Bottas is more than qualified for this position. Participating in simulator and testing work for Mercedes as a reserve/third driver could unlock possibilities in 2025 and beyond.

When the wheels of the driver market begin to turn once more, having a contract with Mercedes could be essential in Bottas’ efforts to get back on the grid.
