Kimi Antonelli on verge of Mercedes announcement

Toto Wolff has spoken extensively about Max Verstappen throughout 2024, often in a provocative fashion. The Mercedes team principal has repeatedly mentioned Verstappen as a genuine target. Partly thanks to Mercedes’ improved results, these comments were taken more seriously before the summer break. However, it is understood that Kimi Antonelli – always the first option – will drive for Mercedes in 2025.

Mercedes confident in Kimi Antonelli

In the early stages of 2024, there was a combination of scepticism and excitement that followed Kimi Antonelli.

On one hand, the 17-year-old’s junior career was obviously exceptional. On the other, describing someone yet to compete in Formula 2 as a replacement for Lewis Hamilton seemed a huge stretch.

However, the last few months have seen Antonelli slowly cast away doubts about his ability.

Mercedes have always prioritised the Italian’s growth, putting more experienced drivers like Sainz on hold whilst they assessed Antonelli.

According to Toto Wolff and James Allison, Antonelli’s performances in his tests with Mercedes have consistently impressed.

Meanwhile, there are already plenty of stand-out moments from his F2 campaign. The most important moment was in Silverstone when Antonelli dominated the field in wet conditions.

Combining these improved results (especially compared to teammate Oliver Bearman) with Mercedes’ private tests, the indications are overwhelmingly positive for the junior driver.

Announcement expected next week

As part of Antonelli’s F1 preparations, he will compete in FP1 for Mercedes in Italy. This also fulfils one of the team’s mandatory rookie Free Practice sessions for 2024.

This FP1 outing will likely come after the 17-year-old is announced as a Mercedes driver for 2025.

Mercedes are understood to have already made their decision. The next step is to go through the formalities, with an announcement at Antonelli’s home circuit, the ideal location, to confirm their choice.

With Mercedes once again regularly fighting for wins, the youngster faces an immense challenge next year.

However, this difficulty also gives Antonelli an opportunity to demonstrate his calibre immediately.
