Carlos Sainz Jr has no intention of breaking his Red Bull contract

Carlos Sainz Jr has revealed that he has no intentions in breaking his contract with Red Bull and Toro Rosso. This follows a number of reports that suggested that Sainz may leave Toro Rosso to join Renault at the Hungarian Grand Prix where he would replace Jolyon Palmer.

These reports were a result of a dispute between himself and Dr Helmut Marko of Red Bull at the Austrian Grand Prix, where Sainz said that he would not be driving for Toro Rosso for a fourth season after making his debut for the team in 2015. The 22 year old has however, confirmed that he is under contract with the team for the future.

“As in life in general, a contract has a lot of importance in Formula 1,” Sainz told Soy Motor. “Thinking about my situation, I’m happy where I am and have no intention of breaking any contract.

“I think everything was taken out of context,” said Sainz when talking about his dispute with Marko, “both in my statements and maybe the reaction on their side. It was cleared up and is now understood a lot better. We are all much calmer and happier now.”

The Spaniard also played down his tensions with Daniil Kvyat, with both drivers having a number of on track incidents with one another in 2017. This was most notable at the British Grand Prix where the team mates collided in Maggotts and Becketts on the first lap.

“It’s just things that happen,” he said. “I think in a year of Formula 1, there will always be a race with a little tension with your teammate, and another one in which the team boss says something. I’m lucky that I’m doing a very good year, contributing very good results for the team, that I have many points. I think for that I can be happy and proud.”

After the first 11 races of 2017, Sainz lies in ninth place in the Drivers’ Championship with 35 points with a best finishing position of sixth at the Monaco Grand Prix.
