Williams confirm Luca Ghiotto for Hungary in-season test
Ghiotto currently competes in Formula 2 for Russian Time, and has enjoyed a successful 2017 Season so far. He currently lies in fifth place in the Drivers’ Championship with 86 points and three podium finishes under his belt. Before the championship was rebranded to Formula 2, Ghiotto made his debut in GP2 in 2016, where he secured one win in his rookie season.
Prior to progressing to GP2 and Formula 2, Ghiotto also competed in the GP3 Series where he impressed all onlookers, breaking the record for the most pole positions and fastest laps in a single season. Despite taking five wins, he narrowly missed out on the championship, being pipped to the post by Force India’s Esteban Ocon.
Talking about his chance to test the Williams FW40 next month, Ghiotto said, “A big thanks to Williams for this opportunity. I think the first F1 test for any driver is a special moment, and to do it with such an historic team is even better so I’m really excited. Of course, I also need to focus on the F2 weekend beforehand, but I’m really looking forward to the test and I really hope it goes well.”
The Deputy Team Principal of the team, Claire Williams, also commented on Ghiotto’s opportunity, “This will be Luca’s first opportunity of a Formula One outing. Our team has a strong track record for developing young talent, and we always enjoy seeing young drivers getting opportunities to demonstrate their ability. I look forward to seeing how he performs in the car next month.”
