BRDC set to end British Grand Prix contract

A shadow of doubt has been cast over Silverstone Circuit this morning, with it now being more probable than ever that the circuit will activate their break clause, which would mean that they would host their final British Grand Prix in 2019.

BRDC set to end British Grand Prix contract

This is a result of the rising costs of the event, with the cost of the event increasing by 5% every year that the race is held. This would see the BRDC paying up to £26 million when Bernie Ecclestone signed a £12 million deal with the circuit in 2010 which would mean that the race would be held until 2027.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, the BRDC’s John Grant said: “It is highly probable we will have to activate the break clause.”

Another figure of the BRDC added: “It has come too early for Liberty [Media]. They do not yet know which races they want to help keep on the calendar. For example, Chase [Carey] has never been to a grand prix at Silverstone.

“It is not Liberty’s fault,” added Grant and the anonymous figure. “They would like to be of assistance but time has been too short and we will now give ourselves a longer stretch to sit down with them again and plan for the future.”

July 14th is the final day that the BRDC can activate a clause that will allow them to opt out of the current deal that they hold with Formula 1 that was signed in 2010. If this did happen, the 2020 Season would mark the first time that the British Grand Prix was not held since the creation of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1950.
