Logan Sargeant under threat from Drugovich for Williams seat

F2 Championship - Round 13:Monza - Sprint Race

As Logan Sargeant works to secure a new Williams contract, the final stretch of 2023 will be crucial to showcase improvement.

The American driver represents a significant investment for Williams, having signed him to their academy last year. Logan Sargeant earned an F1 drive one year ahead of schedule, impressing immediately in Formula 2 with Carlin.

Team principal James Vowles has been generally complimentary of the 22-year-old. Even during difficult spells of form for the rookie, Vowles displays a refreshing amount of patience with his young talent.

However, this does not mean Sargeant is not being held to a certain standard. Improved race pace, qualifying performance, and points will all be necessary.

Williams is a team on the rise, with James Vowles leading their climb up the field. The recently appointed team boss speaks openly about the importance of investment to rejuvenate the squad’s long-term potential. Newer facilities and poaching key personnel from rivals are two areas the Grove-based team is focusing on.

In combination with this, a strong driver line-up capable is crucial. Alex Albon has been overwhelmingly successful in this department, securing a series of vital points finishes in 2023. The Thai driver is a highly sought-after commodity in the market, presenting Williams with a challenge to keep his services moving forward.

Time slowly runs out

On the other side of the garage, Logan Sargeant is still working to establish himself. To be clear, it is normal for rookies to take some time before fully acclimatizing to F1. However, this does not mean Sargeant is exempt from the expectations of competing at the top of motorsport.

Drivers who are F1-calibre tend to prove their ability relatively quickly. Almost every driver on the grid, from Lewis Hamilton to Esteban Ocon, showed promising speed and produced noteworthy results in year 1.

Sargeant started the year in reasonable form in Bahrain and Jeddah, but the deficit to teammate Alex Albon has remained stagnant in the months since. Furthermore, a growing number of unforced errors (Zandvoort qualifying, Singapore race) are beginning to creep in.

The 22-year-old is aware that he must start delivering, as he explained to the media in Japan:

“From a pace standpoint, I feel like I’m pretty close to where I need to be.

“[I have to] just clean it up, start delivering when I need to, and it should be all good.”

Potential Alternatives

It must be stressed that Williams has shown a significant level of tolerance for Sargeant’s learning curve this year. Vowles continues to defend Sargeant in interviews, ensuring F1 news headlines are as kind as possible to the youngster. There has also been little talk of Williams searching for a replacement until recently. Reports indicate that Felipe Drugovich is a driver under consideration. Crucially, it is reported the American’s current form has contributed to the team initiating talks with the Brazilian driver’s camp.

The Formula 2 Champion was in contract talks with Alfa Romeo over the summer as the Swiss outfit evaluated its 2024 options. Another Sargeant crash in Japan qualifying, though not a death sentence, gives Williams more reason to evaluate alternatives. There is an approximately six-tenth difference between the two Williams drivers in qualifying this year – the biggest of any teammate pairing. At least so far, Drugovich is the biggest threat to the American’s F1 future.

Drugovich offers plenty of sponsorship with him, alongside an undoubtedly massive cohort of Brazilian fans. Alongside the potential shown in his dominant Formula 2 victory, the Grove-based has reason to assess the 23-year-old’s abilities. Mick Schumacher was widely discussed as an option for the team going into 2023. However, he has recently been ruled out of contention – as he comes closer to joining WEC with Alpine.

A contract extension seemed near-certain for Logan Sargeant, but his Formula 1 future depends on a very rapid change in trajectory.
