MP Motorsport has announced their second driver for the 2023 Formula 3 season in the form of Jonny Edgar who is switching from Trident.
MP Motorsport has confirmed that Jonny Edgar will be partnering alongside rookie Mari Boya. This will be Edgar’s third season and team during his time in Formula 3. Edgar raced for Trident during the 2022 Formula 3 season and has decided to make a switch for next year. He is the 15th F3 driver to be announced.
Edgar’s history
Born in Whitehaven, UK, Edgar began his single-seater career in 2019 competing in the Italian Formula 4 Championship. Finishing tenth in the standings he then moved on to the ADAC Formula 4 Championship, winning the title with six wins and five further podiums.
In 2021, Edgar made his Formula 3 debut with Carlin Racing finishing 18th in the standings. At the beginning of the 2022 season, Edgar moved to Trident and was considered a title contender. However, he soon revealed that he had been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease during the winter and would be unable to complete the full season as he focused on his health. Despite only participating in fourteen races last season, Edgar finished the 12th in the final standings.
In September, Edgar participated in the Formula 3 post-season test for MP Motorsport alongside Boya and Franco Colapinto.

Following the announcement, Edgar stated:
“This year has been difficult with my health issues, but I have fought back and really worked on my fitness in the car. So now I’m relishing the thought of a fresh attack on FIA F3, as it feels like unfinished business to me. I can’t wait to get going!”
Sander Dorsman (Team Principal of MP Motorsport) added:
“We are truly pleased to welcome Jonny in our FIA F3 team. He is an outstanding driver with loads of natural talent, his titles in karting and Formula 4 vouch for that. We look forward to having a hand in rebooting his promising career by providing him with a competitive F3 car.”
