F1: Adrian Newey shapes brave Honda engine design

Aston Martin on the very limit

Of course, assuming that Aston begin running without issues on Thursday, having one less day on track is not an inherent disaster. Should the AMR26 avoid and reliability issues, they can still learn plenty about their new challenger.

At the same time, arriving to testing under such time pressure is never ideal. A complex combination of electronics, hydraulics and the power unit must run smoothly to avoid any further time being lost.

Regardless, the bigger question is whether Adrian Newey has managed to put all the pieces of the puzzle together.

The only obvious limitation to Aston Martin’s 2026 project is timing. Newey only began working at the team last April, which – though early enough to direct 2026 development – is probably slightly later than Lawrence Stroll would have preferred.

Integrating other senior figures such as Enrico Cardile and Andy Cowell, whilst beginning a new partnership with Honda, is no easy task. Moreover, construction of the team’s new wind tunnel and simulator facilities only finished in 2025.

Again, this was early enough to benefit 2026 development – but perhaps a slightly earlier completion would have given more breathing space to ensure all systems work as intended.

Keeping all this in mind, Aston would have been busier than most teams over the winter. Still, Newey’s reputation did not materialise out of thin air, and he has no intention of ending his career at the back of the grid.

As the driving force in producing the AMR26, the 67-year-old’s ambition is already evident in the team’s winter preparations.

The rest of the week will provide a clearer image on how effectively the British team are juggling their various new personnel and responsibilities.
