Why the Mercedes W17 debut was ominous

Drawing accurate conclusions during the winter break, and by extension pre-season, is very difficult. There are simply too many variables at play for any certainties to emerge before the cars go through their paces in testing.

Still, it would be untrue to say that nothing can be gathered before lights go out in Australia. Heading into the 2026 regulations, there are already areas of consensus that are difficult to ignore.

For Mercedes, reports in recent weeks have consistently pointed to them as the team to watch in this year’s campaign. Whilst it would be premature to declare anyone title favourites at this stage, the W17’s debut shakedown in Silverstone did not go unnoticed.

Mercedes make statement of intent with W17 shakedown

One of the inevitable aspects of Formula 1 pre-seasons is that teams, especially the front-runners, try to manage expectations. The preference is always to go under the radar, largely to avoid the weight of expectations at round one.

For Mercedes, however, keeping a low profile has been almost impossible. Their engine, which was confirmed legal by the FIA at a meeting on Thursday, has been the talk of the town.

Even before news of their polarising engine solution circulated, the German manufacturer was widely expected to deliver the best power unit.

In-depth preparation, early resource allocation and modern infrastructure were all seen as strengths Mercedes could benefit from in 2026. The fact Mercedes will enjoy an additional engine advantage (via their compression ratio trick) has only compounded this preconception.

With that said, very little has emerged about the Brackley squad’s aerodynamic platform. This is only natural, since teams do their upmost to keep this a secret.

However, when the Mercedes W17 made its track debut yesterday, a few things became clear. The first thing that was obvious, more so than any other team, was an unmatched sense of confidence.

Everything according to plan

Although other teams have done shakedowns with their 2026 cars, none were as ominous as that of Mercedes. For starters, the Silver Arrows are the only team to complete the maximum 200km of running permitted in these ‘filming days’.

Unlike their rivals, Toto Wolff’s team had no reservations about doing the most laps permitted by the regulations. Others were more hesitant, weary of potential mechanical problems should they carry out a full day’s running.

Speaking of problems, other shakedowns thus far have seen a few interruptions. Whilst none of these issues were detrimental, the likes of VCARB saw significant delays in their shakedowns.

The same cannot be said for Mercedes, who were successful in finalising the most comprehensive and trouble free-shakedown of pre-season so far.

Moreover, the package which the Silver Arrows brought yesterday was relatively sophisticated. The W17 was certainly more advanced from an aerodynamic perspective than the other cars we have seen until now.

The fact Mercedes were confident enough to publish HD images of their 2026 car only adds to the growing feeling that Mercedes are entering the 2026 season a few steps ahead.

Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin reflected on the W17’s debut:

“We have had a sensible first day of running with the W17 at Silverstone. As with any shakedown, the focus is on ensuring everything operates safely and reliably.

“We were able to get through our allotted mileage, with both George and Kimi getting to experience the 2026 car on track for the first time. That is testament to the hard work of everyone at Brackley and Brixworth.

“Our attention now turns to Barcelona, where we will look to build on today’s running and add to our understanding of the W17.”
