F1: Why Ferrari will be almost impossible to read in pre-season

A radical approach for engine and aerodynamics

Fred Vasseur has made no secret of his outlook on the upcoming season, especially the first few months. There are great volume of ideas coming from the factory in Maranello.

Some of these concepts and designs are in the final stages of production and will be fitted to the SF-26 next week in testing. It must be stressed that collecting data on a combination of basic and sophisticated components is of the upmost importance.

Beyond this, Ferrari also have several upgrades in the pipeline. These are scheduled to arrive after the first races of the season, though this will be contingent on how accurately the data from the factory correlates to the circuit.

Regardless, the philosophy at Ferrari is to develop aggressively in the opening rounds of 2026. This means the SF-26 should see a rapid evolution in a relatively small time period, with the intention of quickly getting to grips with the fundamentals of these new cars.

Because of this, Fred Vasseur is not overly concerned with the team’s position at the season opener in Australia. The Frenchman has warned that spending too much of your budget cap at the beginning of the year will limited a team’s ability to adapt later in the season.

This is why Ferrari have already planned a few steps ahead for their first upgrade sequence of 2026 – whilst also keeping funds and wind tunnel hours in reserve to respond and react to the first sensations from pre-season testing.

As a manufacturer team, Ferrari’s power unit is another essential piece of the puzzle. Excluding a dramatic surprise, the engine to beat should be Mercedes. This is something on which drivers, engineers and analysts are aligned.

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu is the latest senior figure to predict the Silver Arrows will have the best power unit.

To have any chance of fighting for the Championship, Ferrari’s engine must at least be within touching distance of Mercedes. Not only is this essential to combat Mercedes, but also their customer teams – including McLaren and Williams.
