Stella: “We may even see a better version” of Norris after DNF

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella was forced to watch Lando Norris suffer his first mechanical retirement in years at Zandvoort, in what was a potentially title-deciding moment.

Stella has overseen a complete renaissance at McLaren, taking the team from the back at the start of 2023 into constructors Champions in 2024.

With nice rounds to go, the papaya team are on track to clinch both world titles with relative ease.

Unfortunately for Lando Norris, a rare mechanical failure puts him at a 34-point deficit to Oscar Piastri.

Whilst this retirement obviously changes the dynamics of the title fight, Andrea Stella believes it could spark Norris’ best form.

McLaren reflect on rare mechanical DNF

There are many factor have have gone into McLaren’s success over the last eighteen months, which has seen them become the benchmark in Formula 1.

The primary reason for their success is an excellent engineering and aerodynamic team, which has fully grasped these ground-effect cars.

Unlike rivals, the Woking team have an almost perfect success rate with their upgrades.

McLaren have such confidence in their correlation tools that, in Canada, a specific update was introduced to make Norris more comfortable in the car – an update Piastri was happy to avoid.

In addition to McLaren’s elite development team, they have also had rock solid reliability.

Of course, most teams have consistently avoided car-related retirements since 2022, largely thanks to the robustness of modern power units.

Still, McLaren in particular have excelled in this department.

Until Zandvoort, they avoided the DNFs that other Mercedes-powered teams (Aston Martin in Monaco, Mercedes in Imola and Monaco) have suffered.

Norris’ retirement, however, adds an unexpected dimension to this year’s Championship battle.

Though Andrea Stella acknowledges this, he believes Norris’ new reality could bring the best out of him.

“If anything, we may see even a better version of Lando because now is the time to extract – if there is anything more – even more out of his potential.

“I look forward to seeing Lando in the coming races.

“I’m sure this is going to be a great spectacle for Formula 1.

“And if anything, it’s going to make the competition with Oscar even more interesting.”

Still plenty of points on the table

There is some logic to Stella’s optimism that Norris will recover from his Zandvoort heartbreak.

With nine races left this year, there is still time for the British driver to try and create some momentum.

His only option, unless Piastri himself has a retirement, is to win the overwhelming majority of races left in the season.

Even if Piastri wins a few races, that could be enough for the Australian to clinch the title – assuming he finishes second in the remaining events.

A key factor will also be whether Red Bull, Ferrari or Mercedes are fast enough to fight for wins.

If McLaren continue to dominate, Piastri can still finish in 2nd on weekends where Norris has the upper hand.

No matter how you break things down, the odds are certainly against Norris to win the 2025 Championship.

Despite this, as Andrea Stella mentioned, the British driver might find a more positive perspective to look at things.

Until this stage, as the more experienced McLaren driver, Norris has received the brunt of media pressure in this year’s title race.

Piastri’s level of performance this year has taken many by surprise, especially given Norris’ advantage over the Australian in 2023 and 2024.

Following Norris retiring in Zandvoort, the expectation is now for Piastri to win the title.

Whilst outside narratives don’t change the results on track, it can at least be said he is under less pressure.

The 25-year-old must relish being the underdog, if he is to have any chances of turning the tables.
