Why Red Bull are still left with big decisions ahead of 2026

Red Bull shocked the F1 world by firing Christian Horner earlier this week, abruptly ending the 51-year-old’s two decades of leadership. When Laurent Mekies oversees Red Bull as team principal at the Belgian GP, it will be the first time someone other than Horner is leading the Austrian outfit.

The reasons for Horner’s exit are complex and multi-faceted. It will take some time for the impact of his departure to be fully understood.

Still, regardless of Red Bull’s leadership change, tricky decisions lie ahead.

Laurent Mekies must stabilise Red Bull’s driver line-up in the short term

For most of the year, Red Bull’s driver selection has been a major talking point.

In fact, the topic of who should partner Max Verstappen has dominated headlines since 2024 – when Sergio Perez’s struggles became progressively acute.

The decision to promote Liam Lawson was reversed almost immediately, with Yuki Tsunoda being called upon to replace him.

Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, he was thrown into the deep end with virtually zero preparation.

A lack of pre-season testing and overall familiarity with the RB21 was always going to complicate Tsunoda’s Red Bull stint – which has been challenging until now.

Of course, the last eighteen months have shown that Red Bull’s cars during these regulations are extremely difficult to handle.

Under Christian Horner’s leadership, however, this reality offered little consolation to Yuki Tsunoda.

The Japanese driver was never highly rated by Horner, who only decided to promote him when there were no other options.

Consequently, Tsunoda’s position at Milton Keynes beyond this season was uncertain until now – with the British team principal seeing him as something of a stop gap.

Laurent Mekies, however, has a slightly different perspective to his predecessor.

As demonstrated many times, Mekies is far more positive in the #22 driver’s abilities and potential.

The first consequence of this should be that Tsunoda enjoys a more secure position at the team.

It would be unwise to make yet another driver change before 2026, given that Red Bull desperately need stability.

Beyond this, however, the arrival of Laurent Mekies will  also affect the VCARB duo of Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar.

With Red Bull unlikely to make a driver change short term, all eyes turn towards their second team – with the ascendance of Arvid Lindblad throwing a spanner in the works.

Lindblad adds another variable to the equation

As outlined above, Laurent Mekies primary task will be to usher in some stability at Red Bull.

Should Verstappen decide to continue at Red Bull for 2026 (or if hi exit clause cannot be activated) that will be a major success for Mekies.

The French team principal has something of an uncertain situation to address ahead of the regulation changes.

Beyond Verstappen and Red Bull, however, uncomfortable decisions must be made regarding the Racing Bulls.

Isack Hadjar is performing well in his rookie campaign, regularly fighting for points in the VCARB 02.

Lawson, meanwhile, is still recovering from his abrupt Red Bull demotion – and is yet to match Hadjar’s performances.

For Laurent Mekies, one of these drivers might have to be replaced for 2026.

Arvid Lindblad, the 17-year-old Red Bull junior, is seen as an F1-calibre talent within the team.

His performances in Formula 2 (as well as his Silverstone FP1 run) have impressed the Milton Keynes squad immensely.

Should Lindblad’s trajectory continue, Mekies might be pushed to shaking up VCARB’s driver line-up.

Not only is this relevant for VCARB’s line-up next year, but it will also impact the options Red Bull can evaluate as contract negotiations evolve during 2026.
