I wonder what it takes to be put in the category of the worst driver in NASCAR history. Whatever it does take, Kris Wright, who drives the No. 5 Chevrolet for Our Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, has more often than not proven he’s at the top of that list. Boy, has it been rough for the 30-year-old driver from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He’s making a name for himself, but not in a good way.
No joke, has this guy finished a race in his life? It begs the question: When will NASCAR step in and tell this guy to get lost?
Kris Wright Might Be the Worst Driver in NASCAR History
Wright’s antics played out on full display this past weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. He had two moments where he put himself into the broadcast. The first was a normal one-car incident, when he hit the wall and spun out.
That was what it was. Inexperience at its finest. But that wasn’t his biggest blunder on Saturday. Kris Wright found himself ahead of race-winning contender and leader Justin Allgaier following the leaders making green flag pit stops.
Wrecking the Defending Series Champion
So what did Wright do? He completely forgot how to drive. Or maybe he didn’t know how to begin.
Wright kept changing where he was on the track; he was going high, low, and as the much faster Allgaier caught him, the two wrecked. Wright’s sporadic driving took out the defending series champion and one of the leaders of the garage. Allgaier was pretty humble after being checked and released from the care center. More or less taking part in the blame for the incident.
” The hard part is, ultimately it falls on my shoulders,” Allgaier told NASCAR.com. ” We’d about gotten crashed a couple laps before the green-flag stop there, and I think they had some damage, and he (Wright) was having a bit of a tough time with his race car, and I’m trying to catch back to the 88 and trying to push and ultimately put myself in a bad position.”
Sure, Allgaier was fighting to stick with Kyle Larson, but there is no excuse for Wright being an idiot on the race track.
It Isn’t The First Issue
To put your name in the hat as the worst NASCAR driver ever, you have to have made stupid mistakes more than once. Arguably, Wright’s whole NASCAR career to this point has been a danger to himself or others on the race track. Look no further than the nonsense that happened coming to the pit lane during the season-opening race at Daytona.
Wright completely drove through Josh Bilicki. He could have seriously injured himself or Josh. It was one of the worst incidents I’ve ever seen. But it didn’t stop there as he and Bilicki continued to have issues on the track at Atlanta and Circuit of the Americas as well. Does this guy even care? I get he’s bringing sponsorship money, clearly that’s the sole reason he has the ride he has, but he’s a menace.
There has been a lot of talk around the sport about what drivers have to do to be able to race. I think it’s time for NASCAR to step in. I’m not the only one, as Dirty Mo Media’s Door Bumper Clear had plenty to say about this past weekend’s incident, and how Kris Wright continues to be an issue.
Time for NASCAR To Step In
Co-host and NASCAR spotter Freddie Kraft agreed with Allgaier’s stance on the incident, but he also questioned NASCAR as a whole in why they let this kind of thing continue to happen.
” I’m alright with Justin taking some of the blame for this because at the end of the day, he ran at the back of the pack,” Kraft said. ” But how long are we going to let this guy drive around?”
His take wasn’t the best as Tommy Baldwin Jr, who is also part of the podcast, suggested Kris Wright needed his driver’s license taken away.
” Come on. The guy should even get his driver’s license revoked. I mean, did you see the amount of lanes that he took? He doesn’t even understand where he is,” Baldwin added.
At this point, NASCAR needs to consider parking Kris Wright. There is no call for his idiotic driving every week.
