Mick Schumacher enters race for Cadillac F1 seat

Mick Schumacher is among several drivers being considered by Cadillac ahead of their 2026 F1 debut. He is understood to be in serious talks with the American outfit, as they continue negotiations with multiple options.

Schumacher joins Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Perez, Zhou Guanyu and Colton Herta in the race to join Cadillac.

There is still some time before the US squad will be forced to make a decision, considering all the candidates they are evaluating are prioritising an F1 return.

Regarding Mick Schumacher, the question is to what his chances are compared to the rest.

Cadillac consider Mick Schumacher alongside other candidates

Schumacher has spent the last few years working to make an F1 comeback.

Since being replaced by Nico Hulkenberg at Haas, his main objective has been securing a full-time contract.

This is partly why he didn’t race in any categories in 2023, instead opting to become reserve driver at Mercedes.

His thinking behind this move was similar to that of Valtteri Bottas’, seeing it as an opportunity to stay active in the paddock and explore his options.

With that said, he decided that spending another year on the sidelines would be unwise in 2024.

Mick Schumacher joined Alpine’s WEC programme, where he continues to race – including against Cadillac’s factory team.

He has impressed in the Endurance series since his arrival, though he hasn’t been mentioned as an option to join Cadillac until recently.

When Sargeant’s exit from Williams was first announced, Schumacher was mentioned as a potential replacement.

However, James Vowles silenced this speculation almost immediately by promoting academy driver Franco Colapinto.

When this sequence of events unfolded, it was seen as potentially a last opportunity missed for the German driver to make an F1 return.

Still, thanks to multiple reports from Germany, Schumacher’s hopes of being on the 2026 grid are not completely extinguished.

Other drivers in contention

The consensus since Cadillac’s F1 entry bid was confirmed has been that four drivers are leading the charge to join the team.

Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas represent two experienced, proven options that could help direct the team in 2026.

In the case of Perez, sizable sponsorship also makes him an attractive option.

This is particularly true in the case of Cadillac/GM, who are looking to bolster their brand presence in the Americas.

Sponsorship could also help Zhou Guanyu in negotiations, with the 25-year-old bringing several sponsors to the table.

The Chinese driver is a safe pair of hands who was within touching distance of Bottas during their three years as teammates.

Should Cadillac perceive Zhou as being of a similar calibre to the Finn, his relative youth and financial muscle could tip the scale in his favour.

It should also be mentioned that Cadillac’s team principal, Graeme Lowdon, is part of Zhou’s management team.

Lowdon’s links with the Ferrari reserve driver could be instrumental in negotiations.

Schumacher in the mix, but not the favourite

Finally, Mick Schumacher will be paying close attention to Colton Herta and his results in 2025.

As a young American driver, Herta has received very public enthusiasm from Mario Andretti – one of Cadillac’s senior advisors.

However, he needs a strong IndyCar campaign to have enough SuperLicence points to be eligible for Formula 1.

This adds another unknown in this driver equation.

Returning to Mick Schumacher, it would perhaps be too hasty to describe him as a favourite to join Cadillac.

He has been mentioned as a candidate for several teams since exiting Haas in 2022, and none of these moves have materialised.

Therefore, it would be unwise to suggest he can become a top contender to join the American outfit in 2026.

Still, it is at least worth noting his candidacy – especially since he was spotted at Cadillac’s event in Miami last weekend.

Someone like Sergio Perez would probably fancy themselves as best placed to put pen to paper.

Then again, the 6-time race winner is negotiating with other teams, which could create an opening for other drivers.
