History of Formula E’s American Teams: Andretti, DS PENSKE and Cupra Kiro

American teams have played a pivotal role in Formula E, navigating the highs and lows of the all-electric racing series.

American Formula E Teams: Their Histories and Achievements

From championship victories to struggles at the back of the grid, these teams have experienced it all. Some have benefited from strong manufacturer partnerships, while others have battled to stay competitive with independent operations.

With shifting ownerships, evolving powertrains, and ever-changing team dynamics, their journeys reflect the unpredictability of Formula E itself.

Andretti Formula E

Who: Roger Griffiths (Team Principal), Jake Dennis and Nico Mueller.

Previous Drivers: Jean-Éric Vergne (2014-2015), Marco Andretti (2015), Scott Speed (2015), António Félix da Costa (2016-2019), Kamui Kobayashi (2017) and Maximilian Günther (2019-2021).

When: Season 1-11 (MS&D, BMW and AVALANCHE)

Where: Their headquarters is in Indianapolis, USA.

History

For most of their time in the sport they have finished fifth or sixth in the constructors championship, with their highest position being third in 2022-2023.

Jake Dennis secured both his and Andretti’s maiden Formula E Drivers’ Championship in Season 9 (2022/2023). In the process, he set a new record for the most podium finishes in a single season, standing on the podium 11 times across 16 races.

Dennis joined the team in 2020 and has seen a rotating cast of teammates.

Andretti partnered with BMW for three seasons before switching to a Porsche powertrain in 2022.

Throughout their time in Formula E, the team has typically placed fifth or sixth in the Constructors’ standings, with their best finish coming in 2022–2023 when they secured third place.

In their 136 races, Andretti have had 11 wins, 37 podiums and 1,255 championship points.

History

DS were among the first manufacturers to join Formula E in 2015, alongside French automotive giant Renault.

Despite changing partners over the years, Penske has remained a constant presence – unsurprising given that Jay Penske is the son of motorsport legend Roger Penske, also known as “The Captain.”

Since its inception, the team has consistently used Penske powertrains.

Their performance in Formula E has been mixed, finishing either at the front or the back of the Constructors’ standings. Their best season came in 2014/2015 when they finished second, followed by a third-place finish in 2023/2024.

Over 136 races, DS PENSKE have secured four wins, 18 podiums, and accumulated 888 championship points.

Cupra Kiro

Who: Alex Hui (Team Principal), Dan Ticktum and David Beckmann

When: Season 1-11 (CHINA RACING, NEXTEV TCR, NEXTEV NIO, NIO, NIO 333 and ERT)

Where: Cupra Kiro is headquartered in Silverstone, UK.

History

For most of their time in Formula E, the team developed their own powertrain. However, with new American owners, Forest Road, ushering in a new era, they now use Porsche powertrains.

Cupra Kiro made history in Formula E’s inaugural season (2014/2015) when Nelson Piquet Jr. won the first-ever Drivers’ Championship.

Despite this early success, the team has consistently struggled, often finishing at the back of the Constructors’ standings. Their best result came in 2014/2015 when they placed fourth, but they have finished last in the championship four times.

Across 136 races, Cupra Kiro have secured two wins, six podiums, and amassed 381 championship points.
