Sergio Perez in talks for F1 comeback in 2026

It was less than twelve months ago that Sergio Perez was at the centre of Red Bull’s driver dilemma. His position at the Milton Keynes was under scrutiny throughout the year – until Red Bull took the decision to replace him with Liam Lawson.

Even in the immediate aftermath of his Red Bull departure, Perez is understood to have been working towards an F1 comeback in 2026.

After all, the Mexican driver has a very solid track record in the midfield.

However, his already notable market value is likely to have grown in recent weeks.

After all, Liam Lawson’s struggles in the RB21 have created a more positive narrative about Perez’s 2024 campaign.

With this in mind, Perez is well-positioned as 2026 contract negotiations commence.

Why Perez is valued in the market

Heading into the 2026 regulations, there is immense uncertainty about what the grid will look like.

New engines, different aerodynamic constraints and new sustainable fuels create a huge challenge for teams.

In this environment, having a strong and dependable driver line-up is essential.

Sergio Perez’s 10-year F1 career gives him a wealth of experience to draw upon for the new regulations.

Amidst the worst moments in his Red Bull spell, what cannot be denied is Perez’s ability to identify a problem.

Indeed, it was the 35-year-old who first warned about the RB19’s handling in 2023. At the time, Christian Horner’s personnel did not see these complaints as ground for drastic revisions.

However, Perez’s observations were consistent with those of Adrian Newey – who was also concerned about the characteristics emerging from Red Bull’s challengers.

Regardless, the last twelve months have exposed many of the underling weaknesses in the RB20 and RB21.

A driver such as Perez, capable of giving accurate feedback, will be invaluable in an era of unknowns in 2026.

Ticking the boxes for Cadillac

When focusing specifically on the needs and demands at Cadillac, Perez’s strengths are increasingly important.

It would be unfair to downplay the US outfit’s chances of being competitive in 2026.

Their investment into infrastructure and recruiting skilled personnel put them in a strong position.

They also have the luxury of being able to divert all their resources to the 2026 car – rather than splitting their attention between this season and the next.

Because of this, Cadillac should not be perceived as a team just hoping to tread water in their first campaign.

With that said, the services of an experienced driver like Sergio Perez would be invaluable.

The team have already expressed their desire for someone with experience to join their ranks in 2026.

With this context, it is hardly surprising that Cadillac and Perez are already in contract talks.

According to Fox Sports Mexico, negotiations between both parties are underway.

In addition to the 35-year-old’s speed and experience, he also brings significant commercial value to the table.

This makes him an even more logical candidate for Cadillac – even if the likes of Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will also be working on a deal with the American squad.

Regardless, with the driver market already creating surprises, Sergio Perez’s chances of an F1 return should not be underestimated.
