Mick Schumacher has spent the last few years plotting a return to F1, balancing reserve duties at Mercedes with his Alpine seat at WEC (World Endurance Championship).
After being overlooked in last year’s driver market, including a potential mid-season Williams drive, Schumacher’s chances of making an F1 comeback are limited.
However, the German believes he can perform at a high level if given another chance.
Mick Schumacher reflects on F1 spell
It was Nico Hulkenberg who replaced Schumacher at Haas, joining the team ahead of the 2023 season.
Initially, the reception to Hulkenberg’s arrival was mixed – with large sections of the media voicing their scepticism about a driver who had gone three years without a full-time seat.
Since then, these woes have been largely dispelled.
The 37-year-old was integral to Haas’ success last season, comfortably dispatching teammate Kevin Magnussen during their two years together.
Partly because of this, Mick Schumacher’s value in the market has not been high enough to earn another F1 contract.
Even Toto Wolff, who has frequently praised Schumacher, did not have the 25-year-old near the top of his driver shortlist when Lewis Hamilton joined Ferrari.
Schumacher defends his record at Haas
However, the German believes his reputation has been unfairly tarnished by his spell at Haas:
“Formula 1 will always be a part of my life,” he told Speedweek.
“I decided at the age of eleven that I wanted to drive there. That is still my goal.
“This racing series was, and is my lifelong dream. I still have a score to settle with Formula 1 and want to prove myself there once again.”
“When I look at the current starting grid in the premier class, I have no doubt that I could keep up. I’m no worse,” insists Schumacher.
Formula 1 is, by nature, a constantly evolving sport.
Returning to the grid after several years away, apart from exceptional circumstances, is extremely difficult.
Given the plethora of rookie drivers making their debut in 2025, in addition to the promising talents in Formula 2, Mick Schumacher could struggle to find another opportunity in F1.
In many ways, he is in a similar position to Felipe Drugovich – fellow F2 Champion and Aston Martin reserve.
Still, Schumacher argues that several factors negatively influenced his performance at Haas:
“It would be nice if I got another chance and could prove it. Because I think that a lot of people have labelled me wrong.
“That’s true, but what is not taken into account is that our car was designed for this. Because there were no fixed points, the design meant that it would split in the event of a side impact.
“Other cars would have survived in one piece. I didn’t communicate that at the time because I didn’t want to provoke more friction with the team.
“I was unsettled and didn’t defend myself because I was shy. But ultimately you need self-confidence and support to perform.
“I would defend myself more today – I have matured as a person and would no longer say ‘everything is fine’ so quickly.
“But would represent my point of view internally more uncompromisingly. I had to go through this maturation process to become the person I am today.”
