Maximilian Guenther Career: How the German Arrived in Formula E

Maximilian Guenther, DS Penske driver, is considered one of the most interesting profiles of the Formula E grid.

Maximilian Guenther’s Journey Through the Feeder Series to Formula E

Maximilian Guenther was born in Oberstdorf, Germany, in 1997. He began his karting career at the age of ten, winning the ADAC Kart Masters in 2010.

The following year, he made his single-seater debut in the Formula BMW Talent Cup, where he finished as runner-up.

In 2013 and 2014, Guenther competed in the ADAC Formel Masters, securing the vice-champion title in both seasons.

He moved up to the European Formula 3 Championship in 2015, finishing his rookie season in eighth place. Returning for a second campaign, he claimed four victories and ended the year as the championship runner-up.

Determined to clinch the title, Guenther stayed for a third season in European Formula 3. He secured five wins but ultimately finished third in the standings.

In 2018, the German driver stepped up to Formula 2. His sole victory came at Silverstone, where he triumphed over both George Russell and Lando Norris. He wrapped up the season in 14th place.

The First Years in Formula E

Guenther made his Formula E debut in Season 5, joining Dragon Racing.

He competed in the first three rounds but failed to score points. After being replaced by Felipe Nasr for three races, Guenther returned to complete the season, finishing 18th in the standings.

For Season 6, he moved to BMW i Andretti, where he claimed his first Formula E victory at the Santiago E-Prix. At 22, he became the youngest race winner in the series’ history.

Later that season, he secured another win in Berlin and finished ninth overall with 69 points.

Guenther remained with BMW i Andretti for a second year but had a subdued campaign. His only podium came with a victory at the New York E-Prix, and he ended the season 16th in the standings.

Ahead of Season 8, he joined Nissan e.dams, but the team struggled with an underperforming car. Guenther endured a difficult year, finishing 19th overall.

Guenther’s Seasons with Maserati and the Switch to DS Penske

In Season 9, Guenther joined the newly formed Maserati team. The season began with challenges, but he reached the podium at his home race, the Berlin E-Prix.

He claimed pole position in the first Jakarta race, finishing third. The following day, he secured another pole and went on to win, earning Maserati its first-ever Formula E victory. Guenther ended the season seventh in the standings.

Re-signing with Maserati for Season 10, he took victory at the Tokyo E-Prix and added another podium in Misano, finishing eighth overall.

For Season 11, Guenther made the switch to DS Penske. He won the third round of the season, the Jeddah E-Prix, after finishing outside the points in the opener and securing sixth place in Mexico.

Currently fourth in the standings after retiring from the second Saudi race, Guenther is regarded as one of the most consistent drivers on the grid. A title challenge could be on the horizon.
