Alex Albon: Williams have more upgrades in the pipeline

Narratives can change quickly in Formula 1. Williams have become the most recent example, turning the negativity of last week into a strong result at the Italian GP. Alex Albon showed good pace to finish 9th, whilst Franco Colapinto had a very impressive debut to finish in P12. Looking forward, Albon is hopeful the team can progress further.

Williams change the narrative

There was no shortage of pressure on Williams heading into the Italian GP. The decision to replace Logan Sargeant mid-season generated plenty of criticism, with many suggesting the swap was unfair.

However, as outlined on LWOS when Colapinto was announced, the Argentine is a driver with speed and potential. Those downplaying Colapinto’s abilities were quick to draw conclusions based on Formula 2 results, which – though a rough guideline – are rarely conclusive about a driver’s speed.

In any case, after executing a strong race to finish 12th on debut, Colapinto proved he is capable of competing at this level.

Meanwhile, Alex Albon showed why he is such an indispensable asset to Williams by taking points. Although the Monza circuit is usually a favourable track for Williams, delivering a result when you are expected to (as McLaren are showing) is no easy feat.

Thanks to the team’s lighter and upgraded version of the FW46, Albon is optimistic for what remains of 2024:

“We’re on a slow burner, and we’re kind of just about getting into it.

“We have an upgrade, another one planned for hopefully a couple of races.

“Let’s hope we can try and catch Alpine in the Championship, that’s our target.

“I think the last few races have proved we can have a fairly good car, capable of Q3, so we’ll keep at it.”

Points finishes now on the table

As James Vowles has explained on numerous occasions, Williams began the 2024 season on the back foot.

Components that were supposed to be on the FW46 from the first round were not produced in time. Many parts were delayed by several parts, including those that made the car lighter.

The Grove-based team are working to compensate for this slow start in the next eight rounds. Their current package should be competitive enough to fight for points regularly, especially in races where the front-runners suffer retirements.

Assuming that Colapinto progresses enough to help Albon secure top-1o finishes, Williams could end the year on a high.
