Williams reportedly in talks with Gasly, Bottas for 2025

Williams is understood to be negotiating with Pierre Gasly and Valtteri Bottas for next season.

James Vowles was the recipient of immense praise in the F1 paddock last season. The Williams team principal oversaw his squad secure 7th in the standings – their best result since 2017. Aside from the team’s off-track performances, Vowles was also praised for his eloquent interviews and transparency. One topic where he was extremely consistent concerned his driver line-up. Logan Sargeant was under constant scrutiny for his performances, but the Williams team principal stood by him. However, this situation has evolved in 2024.

Perhaps more than at any point in over a decade, Williams was at the centre of F1 news headlines at the Australian GP. The reason for this influx of attention was the decision to withdraw Logan Sargeant mid-weekend. The American made way for Alex Albon, who was determined as more likely to score points on Sunday.

Whilst this saga has been extensively documented, it is worth mentioning before dissecting Williams’ activity in the market.

Gasly, Bottas among those considered

Reports are increasingly emerging about early contract talks behind the scenes at Williams. The Grove-based team is understandably assessing its options in the market.

With so many drivers currently free agents, the British outfit has an opportunity to improve its driver line-up. Of course, James Vowles and his personnel are still waiting to see if Logan Sargeant can progress.

Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, the indications to start 2024 are not overly encouraging. There are multiple options across the field (not to mention F2 talents like Kimi Antonelli), meaning that Sargeant’soutput needs to improve.

Pierre Gasly and Valtteri Bottas are mentioned as potential targets for the British outfit. Both drivers are experienced and proven in Formula 1, enjoying several podium finishes and race victories between them.

For different reasons, they will be holding conversations with projects throughout the grid. With Alex Albon establishing himself as the team’s benchmark, James Vowles has a chance to strengthen the team’s driver combination.

In such a competitive midfield, Williams is logically taking steps to keep up with increasingly well-funded and ambitious rivals.
