Sergio Perez: “I am sure Max will help me” in battle for P2

Sergio Perez is optimistic that Max Verstappen will help him secure P2 in the Championship, should the scenario present itself.

With three rounds left in 2023, Sergio Perez still battles Lewis Hamilton for second place in the F1 standings. Based on recent results, both drivers are still capable of finishing as this year’s runner-up to Verstappen.

The current deficit between Hamilton and Perez is just 20 points, which can be overturned in one weekend – especially with the Sprint race format. Moreover, were it not for the Mercedes driver being disqualified in America, their points total would be equal.

Hamilton lost 18 points in America, with the Red Bull driver subsequently gaining two points.

In any case, several factors will impact who emerges victorious from this battle. Incidents have cost both drivers big points in recent events, preventing either driver from gathering momentum for the final rounds.

With both drivers at the wheel of machinery capable of podiums, retirements can be detrimental. However, Sergio Perez has the luxury of a significantly faster car than the 7-time World Champion. Most would argue that Perez should have significantly more points than he’s accumulated.

Despite this, the 33-year-old is confident he will receive Red Bull’s support in the fight for 2nd. Perez even mentioned that he expects help from teammate Max Verstappen if necessary:

“If the situation arises, I am sure Max will help me,” he told the media in Brazil.

“We just haven’t thought about it yet. It is also important to have the support of the team.

“We are in this together, and it’s also nice to feel support from the fans.”

Twelve months since controversy

Of course, it was at last year’s Brazilian GP that saw a dramatic episode unfold within the Red Bull camp. Sergio Perez was frustrated that Max Verstappen didn’t let him pass in the late stages of the race. At the time, he was also fighting Leclerc to finish 2nd in the standings.

When questioned on why he refused to give Perez a position, Verstappen stated on team radio, “I have my reasons.”

It must be said that, based on 2023 so far, it is difficult to imagine a scenario where Verstappen can “help” Perez on track. The Dutchman is almost always leading the race, whilst the Mexican driver is generally further down the field.

Regardless, this fight for second in the Championship is set to evolve this weekend.
