F1 news outlets covered the boos aimed at Max Verstappen in COTA, but few could have anticipated Red Bull would feel the need for extra security in Mexico.
Verstappen was greeted with boos from the crowd on the Austin podium as he claimed yet another victory in 2023. Hostility is hardly a rare occurrence for serial F1 winners, who often become the metaphorical “villains” for fans. The Dutchman himself is unconcerned by jeers, explaining post-race that (provided he wins the race) he is unaffected.
However, more pronounced concerns have emerged in the build-up to the Mexican GP. Several weeks ago, circuit organisers began a “racepect” campaign to encourage respect for drivers across the grid. Although this slogan can apply to anyone in the field, this initiative is largely targeted at Red Bull.
It is no secret that Sergio Perez has struggled this year, unable to match the efforts of Max Verstappen. This is especially frustrating given Perez’s strong start to the year, where he secured two race victories and a handful of podiums. His decline in form and results since then have triggered mixed reactions.
Tensions rise
Whilst some have questioned if he deserves to stay with Red Bull for 2024, there are equally strong opinions on the opposite side. On social media, there have been several criticisms about Perez’s treatment at the Austrian team. Although there is no proof, there are fans who speculate if both drivers receive the same machinery.
Regardless of how many people actually buy into this theory, the hostility towards Verstappen remains. Red Bull has spotted a series of threats made towards the reigning Champion on social media. As a result, action has been taken to ensure his safety.
Helmut Marko explained the team’s decision ahead of this weekend’s action:
“Max actually doesn’t want that [bodyguards], and [he] is relaxed,” Marko told f1-insider.
“But we have a responsibility to him. So we just want to be on the safe side.”
Red Bull take no chances
Although the weight behind such social media threats is unclear, it is no surprise to see Red Bull showing caution. These conversations are obviously not what the Austrian team wants, especially after a historic Championship triumph.
Regrettably, the tension surrounding Sergio Perez’s place in the team has led to some unsavoury rhetoric online. As mentioned previously, it is not uncommon for drivers to face some degree of public backlash. In fact, winning in Formula 1 – and most elite sport – almost always results in opposition.
Still, this does not excuse threats against driver safety, which is always the priority. It is because of this that Red Bull is taking precautionary steps. It is a shame that such stories must be covered in F1 news cycles, especially given the calibre Max Verstappen has shown in 2023.
