Formula E: Commanding Cassidy secures team title for Envision

Envision Racing have won the 2022/23 Formula E team’s title after Nick Cassidy stormed to victory in the London rain.

After a devastating end to Cassidy’s title chances yesterday, the New Zealander dominated in a race delayed by the adverse weather. In doing so, Envision claimed the Formula E team’s title ahead of Jaguar. Their driver, Mitch Evans finished 2nd, while World Champion Jake Dennis 3rd.

Originally the race was due to start shortly after 5pm local time, however the rain was deemed too heavy for racing to commence. Sweeping vehicles were brought on to clear the excess water and the first two laps were completed behind the Safety Car. Following one failed attempt to restart, the race was finally underway some 90 minutes after the original start time. It was the first wet race of the season and the first of the Gen3 era.

The wet-dry conditions from the outdoors to inside the London ExCeL Centre led to a conservative and cautious race with little overtaking action. The patient 40,000 spectators were eventually treated to Dennis storming into 3rd ahead of Nissan’s Norman Nato in the early stages. British fortunes further down the grid were increased with Dan Ticktum completing an impressive overtake on Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein.

Jaguar’s misery was compounded by Envision when Sebastien Buemi moved ahead of Sam Bird in the late stages. The race was given four extra laps but would not hinder or hamper Cassidy, who kept his cool to take a dominant victory, ending his season on a high note. Outgoing champ Stoffel Vandoorne finished 5th for the DS Penske team.
