Gabriel Bortoleto leads the Formula 3 championship by 36 points over Pepe Martí. The Brazilian has been leading the championship since the very first weekend in Bahrain. Bortoleto’s consistency is particularly impressive. However, one bad weekend in Hungary and the championship can turn around, with a maximum of 39 points up for grabs. The flip side for Martí is also true, a few bad results and Bortoleto will be in a prime position to win the championship in Belgium.
The Hungaroring
Hailed as the first Grand Prix behind the Iron Curtain. The Hungarian Grand Prix has been a mainstay in Formula One since 1986. While a few minor changes were made to the Hungaroring over the years, the track still captures the spirit of an old school F1 track. This track is physically demanding for drivers. There is hardly time to rest between the sweeping corners and the tight technical sections.
A short view back to the past
Last year, Caio Collet won the Sprint Race and Alexander Smolyar took the victory in the feature race. Collet would really boost his season if he wins this weekend. The Brazilian’s season is underwhelming considering it’s his second year in the series. Gabriele Mini also can use a good weekend. The 18-year-old looked to be in a good position to fight for the Formula 3 championship after winning the feature race in Monaco, but a painful track limits violation in Barcelona saw him drop to the back of the grid. Since that weekend, the Italian driver has been struggling to find consistency. The current record for fastest lap is in the hands of Christian Lundgaard a 1:31.761 from 2019.
