Carlin have announced their first driver for the 2023 Formula 3 season adding the young American driver Hunter Yeany.
Seventeen-year-old Hunter Yeany has decided to make the switch from Campos Racing to Carlin ahead of his second season in the Formula 3 Championship. Yeany is the 12th driver to be announced and the first for the British-based team.
Debut Season
Yeany made his full-season debut this past March after finishing 33rd in the 2021 GB3 championship. Crucially, he had already driven six races in F3 for Charouz Racing during the 2021 season replacing Enzo Fittipaldi who had moved up to Formula 2. Yeany would score an eighth-place finish with the team during that run.
After taking part in the 2021 post-season test with Campos he was announced as one of their 2022 drivers alongside Pepe Marti and David Vidales. Yeany would race in the first 11 rounds before a wrist injury caused by a collision at the Austrian Grand Prix would leave him unable to continue for the next three rounds. He was subsequently replaced by Oliver Goethe and Sebastian Montoya before returning for the finale at Monza. Yeany finished the season 33rd in the championship after scoring zero points from eleven races. In September, Yeany was invited to participate in the 2022 post-season test for Carlin.
Despite Yeany’s poor performance last season, he has shown to be capable of success after becoming the youngest-ever winner of a Formula 4 series (the 2020 US Formula 4 Championship). It was his debut season and only 15 at the time.

Following the announcement, Yeany stated:
“I’m really excited to announce that I will be racing with Carlin in Formula 3 next year. Carlin was the first team I ever tested with in Europe, so it feels like a bit of a coming home! Let’s rock it in 2023!”
Trevor Carlin (Team Principal at Carlin) added:
“We feel Hunter has far more potential than he has shown, especially because he missed a handful of races due to injury last year. I know that we will be able to hit the ground running come pre-season testing in Bahrain.”
2023 F3 Driver Lineup
Carlin and Campos were locked in a battle last season in the F3 Championship. While Campos picked up a win, Carlin came out ahead in the five standings by five points. However, as drivers move up Carlin has proven to be the better path as of late, with the team finishing 2nd in the 2022 F2 Championship. With a better car and having taken time out to recuperate, can Yeany work his way into the points for next season?
