As F1 heads to Monza for this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix, rumours are still hovering that suggest that Carlos Sainz Jr could be released from his contract with Toro Rosso so he can join Renault for 2018. The Spaniard has confirmed however, that his future in Formula 1 lies in the hands of Red Bull Racing.

The rumour in question suggests that Sainz would be released from Toro Rosso in exchange for discounted Renault engines, that both of the Red Bull backed teams in Formula 1 use.

“My future depends entirely on what Red Bull and Helmut Marko do,” Sainz told El Confidencial. “I do not discuss anything with them because it’s all in their hands. All I know is that I have a contract with Toro Rosso for one more year and with Red Bull for a couple more.

“So my future depends on what they judge is best for me and where I have to go,” he added.

Earlier this season at the Austrian Grand Prix, Sainz fell out with his bosses at Red Bull which led to a number of reports stating that he had been dropped from Red Bull’s Junior Program and would join Renault for the next race in Hungary. This has been put to bed however, with Sainz still driving for Toro Rosso and set to remain for a fourth season.

“Hopefully Toro Rosso will be better next year and closer to the top three,” he said. “I am not the only driver who wants to take a step forward. There are many others in the middle of the grid in the same situation as me, so we have to be patient for when our moment will come.”

Sainz also admitted that he was unsure as to why Red Bull rebuked him so badly during their dispute in Austria, while Max Vertsappen is consistently criticising the team for its lack of reliability: “I understand the question but I can only tell you to ask Helmut Marko,” he said. “I do not want to get too involved in the politics in F1.”
