With Fernando Alonso being linked to a drive at Renault for 2018, Nico Hulkenberg has said that he would not mind being partnered with the double world champion next season.
Nico Hulkenberg not afraid of Alonso Renault rumours
Alonso currently drives for McLaren, and after three years of disappointment with its Honda power unit, looks set to move to a different team for 2018. Renault is one option that the Spaniard reportedly has, although the team’s Managing Director, Cyril Abiteboul, has played down claims that the French outfit is set to sign Alonso for next season.
Robert Kubica has also been linked to a drive at Renault for 2018, having spent the last six years recovering from a near-fatal rally accident in Italy in 2011.
“I don’t really care about the driver rumours about next season, because I don’t see that it directly affects me,” said Hulkenberg. “My future at Renault is long-term. It is fun to work on the development of the team.
“Of course I have noticed that Alonso and Kubica are mentioned as possible new drivers for our team. For Robert, a comeback would definitely be good for him and the whole sport,” he added.
“And Fernando would of course be a real heavyweight for our team and I don’t mind that at all. On the contrary, he would be a good measure for me and a great challenge. I do not think I would need to hide behind him,” insisted the German.
Nico Hulkenberg joined Renault for 2017 after previously driving for Force India from 2014-2016. After 12 races this season, he has managed to secure 34 points, placing him inside the top ten in the Drivers’ Championship. The 34 points that he has scored has also meant that he has single-handedly propelled Renault to eighth in the Cosntructors’ Championship, only one point behind Haas F1 and 11 points behind Williams who currently lie in fifth.
