Reigning world champion Nico Rosberg is surprised that Fernando Alonso is able to keep up his levels of motivation during the ongoing McLaren-Honda crisis.
Rosberg surprised at Fernando Alonso’s motivation at McLaren
Earlier this week, it was officially confirmed by McLaren that Alonso’s team mate, Stoffel Vandoorne, will remain for 2018. However, Alonso’s place at the team is less certain. Given that Mercedes and Red Bull Racing look set to field an unchanged driver line up in 2018 and that Ferrari has resigned Kimi Raikkonen for another year, the Spaniard has limited places as to where he could go next season.
“Formula one is still my priority, it’s my life, and winning the world championship is what I’m hoping,” Alonso told CNN. “If I don’t see any project that will allow me to fight for the win I will look outside F1 –but that’s [a decision for] November-December. I will try all the possibilities before that.”
Alonso left Ferrari to join McLaren for 2015 at the start of its new era of Honda power. In three years at the team, there have been few signs of improvement, and with the 2017 MCL-32 arguably having the worst Honda engine yet, Nico Rosberg doubts that he would be able to race for the team in its current situation.
“For me, after those years of fighting for the championship, I couldn’t do that,” he told Auto Bild. “I would lack motivation.”
Formula 1 returns this weekend for the Belgian Grand Prix – a circuit that will not suit McLaren and its lack of power. It is expected that Fernando Alonso will make a decision about his future in F1 in the coming weeks. Whether the result of this decision is him staying with McLaren, moving to Renault, or leaving the sport altogether, Alonso is in between a rock and a hard place at the moment in his career.
